Ovarian Pathology

Not in a good frame of mind at the mo - after an emergency A&E visit, I have been found to have a 20cm ovarian cyst - 50:50 as to whether this is benign or malignant.minsee my surgeon today to discuss future,plans and surgery.

In the job I do, i do realise the implications and prognosis of,ovarian cancer. And even if, God please, this is benign, I do have rather a major op ahead of me.

Has anyone got any positive experience(s) of this sort of thing? No negative stories please, I can't cope with those just at the minute.

Sorry, I have no personal experiences.

I disagree that it is 50-50 for being benign or malignant and whoever told you must have more up to date information than myself.

The majority of ovarian cysts are benign.

It was a GPR at the time of my discharge who said the chances are that it is one of 2 things - a benign cyst or Ca ovary - 50:50 as to which. I think his wording was misleading, so I didn't take his 50:50 comment to be actual odds. He also said it is "an unusual presentation which tends towards the negative" - I think his wording at the bedside was Ill-thought out.

Nevertheless, I am apprehensive, to say the least.

erm I had ca rectum diagnosed 1999, and I'm still here !

Yes lots of positive things about ovarian cysts - Princess Anne has one.
so basically you need to see the durgeon and go thro the 'usual'
History, exam and special investigations.
then as you know you have to see the fella again and discuss what your results are. Try not to put yoour life on hold during all this - I would have been on 'hold' for the last 15 y !

oh, and don't allow any of your insurances to lapse - you may as I have done become uninsurable....

Are they less turbulent and murky these days?!! I notice a few (in)famous names missing....

I do pop on here from time to time,but after my own personal experience of turbulence and murk on here, I am very wary .

no personal experiences, but 2 of my friends have had benign ovarian cysts (and one of them must have been around the same age as you) both of them had quite distended tummies and things were found that way. One of them had it sort of wrapped round her bowel. Both of them had them removed, recovered and are back to normal. The older one had a rather long wait for the op, so went private because she couldn't bear waiting to find out

I'm NHS but because of the question of malignancy, I have been dealt with very quickly. As I was an A&E presentation, I had x-rays within hours, and a CT and USS within days. I cannot complain about any aspect of my treatment so far - except for a CA125 blood test that sat in the fridge for 6 days when it should have been sent for analysis.

even if it is the worse case scenario lots of improvements in treatments coming onstream. Are you based at a major regional centre if not get referred to one . Thinking of you... fingers crossed

I'm in a rural market town Rowan. But if it ism something major, I won't hesitate to look elsewhere, probably Cambridge where I had my heart op done. But i hope it doesn't come to that.

Yes bed - 39. Abnormal, but not worryingly so. I was quite relieved by it in fact, I had expected it to be much higher, and so did my doc.

I had ovarian cysts when I was 17/18 years old, they caused me horrible pain and a collapse needing hospital treatment. Once diagnosed I was booked in for surgery to remove them, strangely they went on their own before that happened. My oldest sister also has had cysts, several times. They eventually removed her ovaries to stop them recurring.

My ovaries will be removed, and probably more besides. I am seeng my surgeon today, but i suppose they won't know what's what until they go in there and remove the growth.

Hi Salla. Really sorry to hear about this, but try not to worry. Easier said than done, I know.
I had ovarian cysts when I was younger, about 19/20 I think. It was detected only when I had my first child, on the ultrasound scan.
I had had these sharp pains for a little while and, as daffy above, did collapse on a couple of occasions.
They kept an eye on them and they didn't grow but they just disappeared by themselves, without the need for any surgery.
A girl I used to work with also had an ovarian cyst, which although I don't think was 20cm, it was still fairly large, and had it removed and had no further complications or problems :-)

Back. I am now listed for: laparotomy, total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral saplings-oopherectomy, omental biopsy & peritoneal washing.
Should all be relatively straightforward so long as the cyst doesn't burst (spread of cancer cells), or it hasn't attached itself to bowel or bladder.
