Not A Pretty Subject - Internal Piles Or Bowel Cancer?
22 Answers
This is not a pleasant post, but I don't know you and none of you know me so here goes. Over a year ago things changed. Although I still go to the loo at the same time, about an hour after I get out of bed, now my poo sort of explodes out in a blast of wind. I never feel finished and my bum always feels full. I have even wrapped my finger in loo paper and inserted it a little way and there's always poo on the paper (sorry). There are no piles outside, but my bum seems to "hang down" for want of a better phrase. There's no blood, no itching, no weight loss and I'm not more tired than usual. I daren't have sex in case I break wind and something, er, happens - because I always feel as if there's something about to happen. I went to the doctor when this first started but he thought I was just paranoid because my dad and father-in-law have had bowel and rectum cancer. Is there any sign I can look for or anything I can try to put things right before I go to a different doctor? I've looked on the internet, which has of course terrified me. I'm not a man and I'm not over fifty, which is one of the questions the websites seem to focus on. I'm posting this now before I chicken out. Thanks in advance for any help....

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.There are folk who come on here and could at least tell you if your symptoms are suggestive of one thing or another but I can only reiterate what folk have said, that you need a proper examination. You didn't say if the doc who thought you paranoid (I expect that is your interpretation) made a check or not. Do any of the sites you have visited suggest wind is anything more that a digestive issue ? I'm thinking you may be getting more stressed than warranted by tying in unrelated symptoms ?
I have read your post and find it intriguing, as in my opinion it is a gynaecological problem rather than a bowel disorder.
It would be nice to know your obstetric history...how many children, forceps delivery or indeed difficult labour in any of your pregnancies.
Incontinence of urine and pain on intercourse.
Google rectocoel.

I can only reiterate what others have said about seeing your GP ... but ... to reassure you a bit :
The symptoms sound more like a change of Bowel Activity similar to IBS rather than anything more sinister - in particular the explosive/windy evacuation and the feeling of 'not being finished' are classic IBS symptoms.

Seriously Misky the only way you will find out is to see a real live doctor don't try to google yourself a diagnoses and no matter what anyone here might say there is no way of knowing whether they may have had the same thing as you or not. Please make an appointment, the receptionist doesn't have to know what it's for (it's none of their business) and insist the doctor takes you seriously and gives you a proper examination. All of this is easy to say and I am the worst at avoiding doctors, the worry is not making you feel better is it but the diagnoses might and you will probably find you've put yourself through hell for something simple and easily treated.
Did the doc examine you ?
If not, insist on a hospital examination, you obviously need the peace of mind that either a "nothing's wrong" verdict or a "it's xxxx which can be treated" verdict will give you.
I've had the "paranoid" type of response - a previous GP once said to me, "You worry about your body too much", to which I replied "Well it's a good job somebody does because you obviously don't care".

I hope I am too Old Geezer. The doctor pressed my stomach a bit while I was lying down. Paranoid was his word, but he may have just been saying what I wanted to hear I guess, to stop me from crying lol. Digestion wasn't mentioned on the sites, but of course I only remember the worst bits. I've talked myself into making an appt. and promise myself I'll do it. Thanks to you all for taking time to respond without letting me know you're cringing away from the computer...
Now there are lots more responses! Sqad I haven't had any children I'm afraid. I'll look up what you say,and IBS. I eat lots of good stuff, but also lots of pastry and sweets - mainly because I can because I've always been very slim so I feel as though I can get away with it. So I'm off to swot up and I promise I'll go back to the doctor. Maybe a woman doctor this time. Thanks all.
Did they have a feel up there?
I have a number of gastro symptoms but they seem to be caused by different things, IBS, a malabsorption condition, issue with cow's milk and excess fibre, acid issues, yeast issues etc... Gallstones also caused issues before I had it out a few years back! So there may be various more innocuous causes, they won't necessarily add up to a more sinister diagnosis. It's often the most simple, common answer though any issues in that area need checking out and investigation if appropriate.
I was getting a lot of pain and discomfort in that area, blood, mucus, itching, feeling of not emptying etc... A few GPs had felt up there and said no piles. So I thought maybe issues caused by the chronic (and often burning diarrhoea I get) or maybe something like a fissure. I raised it with my gastro consultant who said he thought it could be piles, even though the GPs hadn't found any. I had an endoscopy done by a surgeon the other week and, sure enough, piles! They "sorted" them at the same appointment.
Hope you have more luck when you next see the doctor.
