As a previous thread i was involved in shows I HATE MY JOB. Last week i booked my annual summer holiday and booked the time i work, i was moaned at because the day i come back is the day the other person on my team goes, so there will be no proper hand over ( bearing in mind for the past two months i have had an average of 1-2 hours work to do a day the rest of the time i have nothing to do ) i would have thought a hand over would be pretty pointless exercise. So this annoyed me then this morning i was coming to work on the M40 and there had been a pretty bad crash and i got stuck in the tailback, i called work straight away to say i would be late and what had happened. I was stuck in traffic for around about an hour making me an hour and fifteen mins late for work but it was unavoidable. The first thing my boss said to me when i got in was ina very sarcastic tone " why has it taken you an hour longer than everyone else to get here?" This really annoyed me as it implyed i was lying or had daudled on my way to work which i hadnt. Am i being too sensitive?

yes - a little bit. Your boss has a job to do too, and he/she probably finds it just as miserable as you do, give them the benefit of the doubt and keep looking for a better job

but i dont think there was any need for the comment about being late when i had already called and told her i would be?
I don't think you are being too sensitive.  I've had a boss like that in my time and it doesn't make the work place a happy environment.  It's laughable that they never believe you no matter what you say.  My previous boss what a horrible man.  I once fell down the station steps and twistered my ankle.. I phone work and told them what happened and I went back home to rest it.  That afternoon my boss rings me up scream down the phone that I'm not there to sort out his mobile phone and that he is ordering me a cab to fetch me and bring me to the office.  I was so annoyed...more fool him, he booked a cab to come from London to Kent and then to take me home, it must have cost him a fortune...all because his mobile phone didn't work.  I'm happy in a new job now, all nice people around me...

I caught a  traffic jam on my way to work one day.  Unusual because I worked for a very large organisation in the middle of nowhere with very quiet roads leading to it;  but the jam was caused by  a problem with electricity lines.  I phoned to say I would be late (approx 15 minutes).

I was appalled to find out later that someone else from the workplace had been sent out in his car to drive approximately 7 miles to find out if I was telling the truth about the traffic jam!

Gem - I noticed you have a female boss. I hope this doesn't reflect on all female bosses, as I was one of them once! I was very considerate, kind, helpful, understanding & efficient of course - in fact all the things that in my eyes make a succssesful boss in the long run.

Personally, I think she was being very unreasonable, seeing as you had phoned in to pre-warn her that you would be late!

If you had have turned up late without giving prior notice, I could understand her being disgruntled, but that wasn't the case. She is obviously asserting her authority & making sure 'it doesn't happen again'!

There has to be give & take in all walks of life, including the work place - otherwise, people will rebel - even in their own sneaky little way!

Salt or pepper in her tea/coffee perhaps?

i just feel a little annoyed that anything i do at the moment doesnt seem to be right!

i did phone as soon as i saw that i was going to be late and i had no way of knowing how long the jam would take to clear! Case was that a car had gone underneath a lorry and there was a lot for the services to clear up

FP - Our posts crossed.

I can't believe anyone would go to those lengths if you were seldom late & especially after phoning in to pre-warn them!

I could understand a boss's suspicions if someone was habitually late, but you obviously wasn't, otherwise you wouldn't have been employed by them for very long!

Gem - I should take a deep breath, get through the rest of today & start again tomorrow.

After all, she may be having a bad day or PMT!

Take care & chin up -x-

Smudge,  I had been late on three occasions in three and a half years and on all three occasions they were phoned and prewarned!    Once was when my mother was taken ill, and another when I had to rush a cat to the vets!!

ive taken a deep breath! it didnt help much but im trying to get my head round the day!

thanks x

At least you had the decency to phone your boss; just do your job to the best of your ability she cant ask for more try and think of positive things be happy smile and the world smiles with you, so they say! In the meantime search for a better job if thats what you want. You have the right to feel a bit annoyed.
I would also point out that we were expected to make up the time if we were late.  One guy had to work an extra 1.5 hrs due to having in puncture on the way to work, and if bad weather stopped us getting in, again the time had to be made up.  Bearing in mind this was in the middle of nowhere and snow and I could be a major problem with ungritted roads, I always thought this was very unfair.  Especially as all other departments in the organisation were not treated in the same way.  The joys of working in a Call Centre!
I have the most irritating male boss in the world, I can totally see where you're coming from. You are not being too sensitive at all, some jerks like this really think they can take the p*ss out of you and take advantage (which is what the loser boss of mine does). I don't mind my job but am sick to death of him thinking he can be an a**ehole with me. I am so close to telling him to F off right now!! Don't let your boss walk all over you, it's not on.

thats how i feel at the moment i am so close to telling her where to stick her job!

Hi Gem123! I don't think your being too sensitive. At least you called to say you were going to be late, rather then just strolling in an hour late. It's probably made worse by the fact that you hate your job.

P.s. did you get the job?

Question Author

no i found out yesterday that i was second choice and they have offered it to some one else.

Ill tell ya i am this close yo walking out and getting temp work till i find something perm!

maybe that wouldn't be a bad thing. Infact that is something I should consider myself. At least that way you get to try out other things while you look for something more permanent and you will still have a full head of hair at the end if it.
Question Author

the only problem ils im supposed to give a months notice here! if i had my way i would walk out now and do temping!

but i do want to get my hair and my sanity!

Advice:  Don't stick in a job if you really hate it.  It will affect your health.  Often temporary jobs lead to permanent ones so go for it.  I have just left my job after a year of being uptight and now realise just how stressed I had become.   Life is too short to stay somewhere that is making you so miserable.
So true FP, I might even take your advice. I feel just the same as you Gem at the minute!
