As a previous thread i was involved in shows I HATE MY JOB. Last week i booked my annual summer holiday and booked the time i work, i was moaned at because the day i come back is the day the other person on my team goes, so there will be no proper hand over ( bearing in mind for the past two months i have had an average of 1-2 hours work to do a day the rest of the time i have nothing to do ) i would have thought a hand over would be pretty pointless exercise. So this annoyed me then this morning i was coming to work on the M40 and there had been a pretty bad crash and i got stuck in the tailback, i called work straight away to say i would be late and what had happened. I was stuck in traffic for around about an hour making me an hour and fifteen mins late for work but it was unavoidable. The first thing my boss said to me when i got in was ina very sarcastic tone " why has it taken you an hour longer than everyone else to get here?" This really annoyed me as it implyed i was lying or had daudled on my way to work which i hadnt. Am i being too sensitive?

ok question 2 - do i have to give a months notice?

if i just walk out will they give me a reference? this has been the only place i have worked since i left school ( i have had various diff job in the same company)

-- answer removed --
I know there are ways around giving a full months notice but I wouldn't advise just walking out. It'll make you look really unreliable to future employees. Obviously I don't know your boss, she might be a right b**** for all I know but maybe if you spoke to her you could come to some agreement to work just half of your notice or something.
I meant employers - not employees.

i guess! i really want out though! ive had enough now!

Hi again Gem - I didn't realise you were actually job seeking. In that case & if things are that bad, I would make enquiries at some temping agencies & if you feel happy about taking that route, I wouldn't hesitate in handing in your notice - but only if you are sure!

I was fortunate enough to be my own boss - well apart from the MD - but if I'd have been as unhappy as you sound at the moment, I would have jacked up & moved on! Life is indeed too short!

I agree with Smudge.... back your bags and move on.  Temping is easy to find and if you don't have the worry of paying for a rented place or having a mortgage then what is to stop you?  Good luck, I wish you well.

Gem 123, as this is your first job since school I would hang in there and give the proper one month's notice,  not just because you'd be in breach of contract otherwise (though an employer will seldom take action unless you're a high flyer in the company and your departure leaves them up the creek without a paddle)but because it won't look good to potential employers who might think you are unprofessional for just 'walking out' on your responsibilities. Most of us have been stuck in a job we hate at some time in our lives so know how it feels. But look upon it as a temporary hiccup in the grand scheme of things. Temping is a great idea; it'll give you some variety and may well lead to something permanent.
what kind of money do temping jobs pay?

Posts crossed, only just read your notice question:

If your contract reads a months notice is to be given, then I would be brave, speak to your boss & tell her how unhappy you are. If she wants to hang on to you, she may cool it a bit & realise she's gone over OTT this time. If you don't work your notice, she could be very awkward & not issue you with either a written or verbal reference for any future employers & that would be a shame considering you've worked there since school.

Personally, I would go home, have your dinner & try to unscrabble your brain, maybe by going for a walk - then try to get a good nights sleep.

Tomorrow morning, go into work & ask to set up a meeting, for when it's convenient for her. I know it must be nerve racking for you, but be strong & start off the conversation by 'asking' her if she has a problem with you, or your work. Let her come back to you with any comments she may have - then tell her how you have been feeling lately. Don't be afraid of crying in front of her, I'm sure she's done the same from time to time herself! Good luck & let's know how you get on -x-

depends what sort of work your doing. I started off temping here!
I once had a job where -- get this! -- I FELL DOWN THE STAIRS AT MY HOME after only working there for FOUR DAYS.....I had to go to emergency room, etc...and on the way the to ER, I phoned my boss to let him know what had happened....his reply was that he couldn't believe I was calling him first rather than an ambulette...I told him I just wanted to make sure he knew...that was on a Tuesday night...I was only out until the following Monday (missing only three days' work where the doctors said I should have stayed home at least a WEEK).  Anyway, I brought in the emergency room papers and he still didn't believe me!  When it came around for my review, he gave me a HORRIBLE one and I refused to sign it.  He fired me on the spot.  I know have a much better job (bosses are still a**holes) but I'm much happier!  Start looking Gem, also it's true about the temp jobs.  I had two in my life that led to something permanent.  Good luck.  Don't waste your living in a place you hate!!! :)

Good for you!!!!! Good luck!!!!!!

Gem - Just to add to my previous post.

On the very few ocassions when we needed temps, I ended up taking some on permanently - so it could very well happen to you.

Safe journey home & good luck for tomorrow!
