My mum has just had dentures fitted and says the bottom set is loose and needs tons of adhesive to stay in place. Even then, she finds chewing difficult.
Is this normal to begin with? Does anyone have any tips I can pass on?

Duct tape works well.

Take 'em back (preferably in the mouth)
They should re-work them so there's no 'clack'
I agree with Albags she shouldn't have to put up with this from new dentures

They should not be loose. She needs to go back
Obviously not fitting snug to the gum, a return visit to the dentist is needed.
If your mum doesn`t have any teeth at all in the lower jaw, and the gums have shrunk long enough then they will tend too, as the denture adhesive will ooze out no matter what, espeacially with hot tea etc,and meals, but tell her to not use too much adhesive as it may interfere with any other medication she takes, and be sure to read the instructions carefully on the back of the box.
It's normal and she will get used to it over time. Tell your mom to read this article if she has more denture questions http://www.cheapdentures.org/questions/
