ear candles

I know, this is gross but what do those ear candle things do?  I've seen them advertised, do they work?

my mum had a ear ache and was going a bit deaf and all u do is gently place it in your ear and light the end of it and just lie down comfortably while someone is holding it, no major effect but it did help! it sends a ringing noise i think she said!? xx

I believe they are called hopi or hoppi candles and by all accounts they do work, however I tend to follow the wise words of the ENT doctors who always say that you shouldn't put anything in your ear that is smaller than your elbow........................!!?
