just had a conversation with my friend, where i talked about smoothing my cat (ie petting him/stroking him) She had never heard of that expression before. does anyone else call it this
(not interested in "urban dictionary" smutty comments please :))

Never heard of smoothing animal. Might hear it up norff though?
I have never heard the term, it can't be a midlands (East) thing as I was born and grew up there and never heard it.
We clap cats and dogs up here in Angus.
i hear it quite a lot but tammies are an odd bunch.
Nope, not heard of it either, we just say we're giving the dog/cat a fuss.
When I was walking the dog with my Gran a couple of kids came up and asked if they could smooth the dog, this was years ago though and I don't think I've heard anyone say it since.
I often have people come up and ask if they can smooth my dog. I always refer to stroking as smoothing.
They say 'smoothing' here in Zummerzet.

My hubby claps the dog. We clap horses also but stroke or pet the cat.
Ive never heard of it either. Ive only ever heard of stroking the cat or dog.
