I would think it would worsen it being as it's salty.
I know it treats Acid indigestion. I have used it for years so I know it works, but I have heard it's not good for you. Keep meaning to ask my Doctor whether or not I should use it.
Best treatment is to drink lots of water, and stay away from any spicy food, or pork products.
Cherries are an excellent aid for gout.  They can be fresh, frozen, dried, glace, anything.  Not sure what it is that helps but they would be better than drinking bicarb
ask your doctor for allopurinol 1 a day

Gout: was the bain of my life for about five years - I first got it at 26, and couldn't believe it when my Dr said it was gout - he prescribed indomethacin, which works excellently, but really only works once you have a flare up.

I was getting it twice a year for about five years, and eventually was sent to a consultant, as they have to run various tests before they can precribe allupurinol. I am now on allupurinol, 1 tablet a day for the rest of my life - which trust me, is better than getting gout (haven't had a flare up since I've been on it - the past two years).

Gout is the most painful form of arthritis - but, thankfully, the most easilly treatable as well.

I should not get gout - I'm reasonably young, fit, healthy and have a reasonably good diet - unfortunately, I inherited a defective gene from my father (together with a big nose - but thats by the by).

First - a fallacy: alcohol does not bring on gout - it may exacerbate it, but it does not being it on.

Avoid food high in purines - Liver, Peas, Shellfish, Marmite etc...

Drink lots of water and eat lots of cherries and celery.

Have never heard of the bi-carb thing - and this is after a lot of research, but may just be that I've missed that little gem.

One interesting point - and this was in a leaflet printed by the arthritis society - people who suffer from gout generally have an above average IQ - I love trotting out that little pearl!!!

Read it somewhere......avoid bananas.
