my wife is thai, i am british. all the time her friends call to house, some just come to the front living room window and knock it, some ring front door bell and wait, but this one particular woman just knocks slightly once on door, opens herself and invites herself into my house, this woman this morning rang doorbell once and walked straight into my house, i have not been brought up this way, i dont like it one bit !! i understand thai culture , they are different, this morning i told this woman in no uncertain terms to ever ever do this again, i had warned her once allready a few months ago. now it has caused friction between me and my wife.

am i wrong ?

I remember house sharing years ago and one of the guys, Portuguese I think, used to leave the front door on the latch all the time so that his mates who lived next door could just walk into the house. It used to drive me mad, so dangerous, especially where we lived and it just seemed rude and invasive, having random people you didn't really know just walk into your home.

I figured it was maybe a cultural or personal thing but with that and other issues (drugs, assaults etc...) I moved.

Is your wife aware of the dangers of leaving the door open? It could also impact on any insurance policies that you may have if you were robbed and the door had just been left open so that anyone could have walked in.
I don't think that's the case if the house is occupied, Eve...
Only family members just walk into mine, some ring the bell first to announce their presence. It's only polite to ring and wait.
I was at a house party once, asleep on the lounge floor alone downstairs on an airbed. My bag and that of a friend was taken from right by me in the night, phones, purses, everything. When we rang the phones these kids were answering!

I had a very hard time trying to sort out my phone insurance as I couldn't guarantee whether the house doors had been locked, as it turned out, probably not as no signs of a break in. I guess something I didn't think about with it not being my house, to my cost.
sandy - best answer to you re Burglar Bill - that's my first laugh today - I never closed my door for years until I was burgled about 2 years ago and they took my car keys and stole my car and I live in Belfast. Lock your bloody door!!!
I lived in Belfast and I left my door open - all my friends just walk in, I now live just outside Belfast and they just knock once and walk in.

I want people to feel welcomed and that it is a house that they are wanted in!
I cant quite get my head around some of these answers, so some of you literally leave your front door 'open' so all and sundry could walk in. Jeez you are a trusting lot. My front door is closed firmly shut.
I should add, if I want somebody to enter my house, they would have their own key.
Or do as I do, sit in the dark with the doors locked- pretend you're out.

Being anti social does have its advantages!
Haha, don't forget never opening your curtains too, like me ;)
haha yeah, one good thing about nights drawing in earlier, you can shut the world out sooner.
but you mustn't show a flicker of light... that goes double for Halloween.
Its a different culture in Thailand, I know as I used to be married to one and lived, there and here.

I don't know how long you have been married or how well she speaks English but, you should have sat her down when she first arrived and told her the English way of life and what you do and don't do when living in the UK.

In Thailand most Thais just walk into peoples houses and its accepted so have a quite word with her to tell her friends to knock or ring and wait till they are invited in.

Hope this helps

Surely you knew that there would be cultural differences when you married. You and your wife need to sit down and discuss the situation and come to a compromise.
