Hi all,

I've just started a five day course of antibiotics (amoxicillin 250mg) and wondered if it's ok to drink with these? Thanks :)

Doesn't it mention alcohol on the leaflet that will have come with the drugs?

There was no leaflet. They're in a bottle, which was just putter in a paper pharmacy bag. The bottle has dosage instructions on, but nowt else.

Sensible pharmacist.
LOL
I thought alcohol was supposed to render the antibiotic useless?

As usual, I can only remember the fact, not the attribution. Can anyone else recall where they first heard anything similar?

Some antibiotics have bad side effects when taken with alcohol, but amoxicillin isn't one of them. The alcohol does not affect the medication.
I don't think any medico will actively advise you to drink alcohol :-) I've certainly drunk with them and unless you get so pied you throw up I'm sure it doesn't harm their effectiveness. The only one I can recall that you can't drink with (as it makes you sick) is something beginning with M like metronodizole (sp definitely wrong).
Hypo.....just a guess and it may well be bullsh1t.......BUT....

In the 40's when penicillin was first synthesized and produced for clinical work, it was found to be effective against the gonorrhea germ.
People under treatment were told not to drink, as after a few, they went and got another dose of the clap.
So all patients on penicillin were told NOT to drink and today this myth persists.

Does that sound about right?.........;-)

Prudie my love.....Flagyl, it is easier to spell.......;-)

Yeah, I was a bit surprised there was no leaflet in the bag either. I don't ever read them, as the huge list of 'possible side effects' tends to panic me a bit, so I would have asked on here anyway.

I don't intend to get wasted, just a glass of wine or two on Sat night.

Thanks to all :)
Me too Mamya :-) tends to be a dentist's favourite.

Hahaha :) Sorry Squad, Mamya's answer has replaced your 'best answer', for the simple fact it just made me 'laugh out loud'.

Easily amused today :) x
Baby_Sham.....no problem.........mine didn't deserve BEST ANSWER and i am not too keen on them anyway...;-)
Good answer by mamya! While we're talking about interactions, excuse me please, babysham- warfarin and cranberry juice?
yes

it is only flagyl that interacts
Why thank you, if I brought a smile all well and good.

I use eyedrops three times a day for my Glaucoma, they have repackaged one and whilst the bottle is tiny and holds 2.5ml of liquid, the leaflet would make a nice spare table cloth for my dining room it is so large.

Print so ruddy small I cannot read it though, have to laugh.

Laughter is good for the soul. I am learning this :) x
