Sprained Ankle
18 Answers
Oh my I'm in agony - even been and had it xray'd!
Nurse (not even a doctor) said take painkillers and keep it moving
So I've elevated it and just now popped a crepe bandage on it
Will that be ok?
Ps - I'm thinking of adding a ice pack to the self medication

Always have a hanky or some other cloth between the skin and the ice-pack (in case of burns) and don't keep it on too long, say 5 mins..
Don't keep the compression bandage on when in bed.
After a couple of days try alternating ice and heat and begin doing gentle ankle stretches........I mean gentle and stop if you get a twinge. Draw circles with the toes, bring toes towards you then push away etc..
I was a track & field athletics coach in an earlier incarnation and have also had a couple of bad sprains myself. Take care.:)

OOOh don't let me be the one to argue with professional advice but the last first aid course I went on (recent) definitely mentioned rest. Not in any way likening you to one of our horsesRic.ror but our vet has decided on occasions not to give pain killers as she says if it doesn't hurt then the silly blossoms(?) use it and do more damage - pain is telling you no tto use it.
Okay
So it's been just over three weeks and my foot is still swelling and the big toe still aches - like where a bunion would be but its not a bunion
My foot also still aches at the front just below my toes (that's where it's swelling)
Should it take so long to get better? I've put 4lbs on cause I'm not walking as much

I sprained my ankle really badly once when I fell off a horse. I managed to ride back to the stables and use it to get home where my military father made me put it in a bowl of ice - from then I couldn't walk for days!! It really hurt for weeks, a lot more than 3 and wasn't pain free for months so if you've had it x-rayed I don't think it's that unusual. Of course if you're worried go back.
