There has always been much fat shaming in the gutter press and on here to some extent but little thought is given to consider those who are skinny.

Not all 'skinny' people are that way by choice. Some describe themselves as scrawny and have similar body issues to the larger folk around them.

I really don't quite understand why fat shaming is considered OK by some, yet slimmer folk are complimented on their lithe bodies just because they can hide behind their clothes and disguise their issues.

It strikes me as terribly unfair and does not take into consideration why an individual has one body shape and someone else another. The reasons are many and varied.

Thoughts anyone?

Well fat folk are such an easy target, but there is a slim chance of the thin folk getting noticed.

I must say this thread is proving my preconceived ideas of attitudes.

Just not in a good way.
But they do, OG, they do get noticed and commented on.

I've lost count of the amount of times the local shop keeper has commented on my weight...in front of other customers as well so everyone looks, even if just briefly. It's embarrassing.
I've mot yet read all the responses, but I've not been let down in my expectancy that the all too common opinion is that those who are overweight are because they eat and drink too damn much and really need some self control. No one would ever look on disapprovingly if a skinny person was stuffing themselves.

I'll go read now.

Not everyone chooses hair body shape, not does their lifestyle lead to it. This seems to beyond the comprehension of many.
"the all too common opinion is that those who are overweight are because they eat and drink too damn much and really need some self control. No one would ever look on disapprovingly if a skinny person was stuffing themselves."

If I saw a couple of friends, 1 skinny and one overweight and they both ordered a very large meal, my sympathy would be with the skinny person as they're obviously trying to put on weight with a fast metabolism.

The overweight person obviously knows their overweight and yet are still happy to add to that weight by overeating? No sympathy there unless the overweight person was eating a smally healthy meal in which case I'd see them as trying so would give them all the sympathy in the world.

Jahulaye, why is it obvious that a slim person has a high metabolism?
When eat our the waiting staff look at me with disbelief if I return a starter half eaten.
That should be eating out!
There has been skinny shaming - heroin chic in the fashion industry being an example
I think its a social thing....a product of our current society but I don't know why.....
Over centuries, different body shapes have been admired...I mean take a look at the ladies Reubens painted....
"Jahulaye, why is it obvious that a slim person has a high metabolism?

Because if that person was going round for round on large dish sizes there would be two overweight people at the table and not one.
Been big all my life (59) 6ft 8"tall ...22 stone can't remember anyone calling me fat ..big or tall yes loads of times but never bothered me once ..to be honest I don't care what people think of my size what's it got to do with them.
Yes I'm 22 stone but I don't eat mountains of food everyday in fact my OH eats more than me ..life's to short to worry about others opinions I've enjoyed my life so far and I wouldn't change anything!
I have been spat at in the street, shamed and been told I eat too much just because I was fat. No one deserves that! I would never comment on a skinny person but many feel its ok to comment on my size.
One day when I am brave enough I will tell you my starting weight but for now I will tell you I weigh less than Voltage.
People come in all different shapes and sizes. Some people can eat whatever they like, metabolise carbs and never worry about their weight - others are the complete opposite.

If I saw a thin person tucking into a giant burger and chips, I'd probably think "you lucky sod." If I saw a very obese person doing the same I'd have to wonder why they were happily eating their way to an early grave.

I actually eat a high fat diet including cheese, eggs, oily fish, nuts and avocadoes, minimal meat and loads of salad and vegetables. Sadly I'm one of those people who has to keep carbs to a minimum.

So they wouldn't be bulimic then?
Folk who simplify and assume larger folk are eating way too much simply have no experience of the issue and believe what seems right to them. I'm sure some skinny folk also get comments, but at least they can turn sideways and disappear. And for sure, they may well not be eating too little either.
"So they wouldn't be bulimic then? "

Only a small percentage, maybe as small as those who are overweight having a thyroid/other medical condition that affects their weight/metabolism
jahulaye we are so lucky to have an expert like you on here.
