Sanctimonious and preaching what is right/wrong to eat works both ways.

I know vegetarians and they don't preach at me or they'd no longer be pals - conversely I don't tell them their diet is wrong either.

This sounds more like a personality disorder then the general thoughts of most vegans/vegetables
I have never been preached at by a vegan or vegetarian. A meat eater yes but not the other!!

To be honest who cares? I don't tell other people what to eat and they don't tell me.
Oh the ignorance! We do not need to eat animals to be healthy (or overweight!). 39 years of vegetarian eating has possibly protected me from some diseases.

But most of all, I can live with myself, and when I claim to be an animal-lover, no-one can accuse me of the sort of hypocrisy that says “there there little furry creature” - and then eats it.

I can honestly say I have never said 'there-there' to anything I have eaten.

Well, some distant ancestor might have climbed trees and bitten through necks, but I do neither, as I no longer need to.
I think the point, bainbrig, is that over tens of thousands of years we evolved to be meat eaters as evidenced by incisors and meat must therefore be an essential part of our diet.
I was taught that herbivores need longer intestines than carnivores, due to cellulose taking more breaking-down than meat. Mind you, that was 60 years ago, so perhaps we've evolved since then.
Millions of people are born in to vegan or vegetarian families and never break from the diet, yet they are healthy, fit and active. 42% of the Indian population is vegetarian.

Many people claim that we cannot survive without vegetables, pulses and grains yet the Innuits eat a mainly fish and meat based diet, very high in animal fats, with very little else and thrive.

How much of what we westerners eat today can be truly called natural?

Ye,s if you cut out a food group you must pay attention to ensure that which you do eat is sufficient such that you are getting the nutrients and suchlike that you need.

But you'll probably cope even if your diet is less than optimal.
