Hi,

I have been meaning to say for ages. Absolutely no disrespect to you, but you mention taking Ibuprofen a great deal in your answers. It's a very good drug for all sorts of aches and pains, available over the counter and I would certainly take it. However, I can't take it because I'm on blood thinners and my husband cannot because of heart issues as it's an Anti-inflammatory drug.

We have quite a few friends in our age group in this situation because of various health issues who have also
Been told to avoid Ibuprofen.

I'm just wondering whether you should issue a warning that Ibuprofen cant be taken by some people and actually for them Paracetamol would be the answer. A lot of folk on here rely on you rather than consult a GP or pharmacist.

Just a thought. There are a lot of oldies on this site!!

As it's a "let's nag Sqad" day, I'll mention that he sometimes neglects to mention that ibuprofen shouldn't be taken until 48 hours have passed after an injury.
I can’t take ibuprofen either, it triggers an asthma attack

There are quite a few things you can't take it for! Fortunately I was warned, but some doctors don't bother. I can't take it for several reasons. But with blood thinners I was warned it could lead to strokes.
Is there such a thing as 'Too' Sqad?

Seriously though, it's to be hoped if people are on medications then their own GP would have pointed out what to avoid.
Because of my stomach ulcer I can't take anything other than paracetamol.

Mamya. Not all doctors do. And if they do, it's easy for us oldies to forget ! Also I have had medics, such as locums recommend Ibuprofen without looking at my notes!

I can't take them because of bowel issues.

I wish I could because they really helped me with pain!
I agree that informing a patient about contraindications should be a duty.

That's why online advice isn't always a good idea. Sqad gives good advice and does direct people to GPS, but I just feel recommending Ibuprofen without knowing history isn't a good idea.

Sqad is just too sqaddy for words!!

He's probably cursing me at the moment ;0(

Chris, I wasn't aware of the 24 hour thing.
Actually when John recently visited the doctor regarding ny knee, he did tell me under no circumstances take ibuprofen. I guess it because I am on statins.
Bleeding and gastric ulceration are side effects if Ibuprofen but the incidence is quite uncommon, I don't know the actual figures but I would guess 1/1000 who take the drug (that is just a guess). People who take blood thinners have the same odds, except that if the do bleed then it may be more difficult to control.

Fine if your happy with Paracetamol and it gives the same relief then take it by all means, but Ibuprofen has greater anti inflammatory powers than Paracetamol.

I don't buy that. If one suspects internal bleeding then perhaps so for example in an RTA in which case Ibuprofen by mouth would not even be in the frame, but, for a twisted ankle or a minor sprain or break the Ibuprofen is ideal. In my opinion.

Patients know, or think they know, if they can take Ibuprofen or not.

Medicine is all about treating the INDIVIDUAL.
John?? John?? Who the heck is John???
It is I.
Sharon, there are some meds you shouldn't take with statins but pain relievers aren't amongst them.
I don't mind taking IBuprofen but they just do not work for me at all.
"Medicine is all about treating the individual". The wisest words I've heard in a very long time. So true but so oft ignored.
I didn't think we could get through a health thread without a bloody link.

with so much valuable advice on the internet I fail to see how AB could offer a reasonable alternative.
