Modern Masculinity

Men have lower life expectancy than women, and significantly higher suicide rates. They are more likely to be the victims of violence and are falling behind educationally.
Certain "male" behaviours that used to be acceptable no longer are, and many within the younger generation feel lost & even demonized in what they see as an increasingly "feminised" culture.
What's going on?

As a bona fide male chauvinist with archaic tendencies. I like a woman to be feminine, intelligent, intriguing, and pretty. Some males today blunder from ingratiating servility to arrogant posturing. The role models of yesteryear are thin on the ground. Women seem to me to be changing from enchanting, to confrontatio nal.

/// Similarly, a man touches a woman's arm and she screams sexual assault, ///
Happened to me on Waterloo Tube Escalator - I was descending on the left (as is customary) and she was standing still in front of me, and as I said "excuse me" I gently touched her shoulder. From her outraged reaction one would think I'd groped her pussy, she started shouting out loud about assault etc. I ignored her and passed on down as soon as she had stepped aside to verbally abuse me. As is often the case, and as I've stated here before, as soon as a sensible and good initiative is introduced, out come the extremists and undermine it.

I have known so many variations of men ( and a few women). Strong does not necessarily equate to masculine. One of the strongest and most outwardly masculine men I knew was gay, I have met straight beer drinking, pick a fight types who were so weak they were pathetic.
Society and more specifically the media creates role models for each generation. It will change over time but maybe we have the 'heroes' that the new generation are seeking as a reaction to the stereotypes of times past. However the reaction to the Ukrainian president has been interesting and he may be the first of a new type of role model, coming across as an interesting mix of human, and warrior archetypes

Khandro; you said..." my dad, was definitely a 'real man': served in the RAF throughout the Africa Campaign WWII, was a prize-winning (along with mum) ballroom dancer, supervised the electrification of the Manchester - London railway line, & yet would spend much time putting in electric wall-sockets & doing jobs for elderly lady neighbours, for which he would accept nothing for payment beyond a packet of cigarettes."
What would you think of a woman who had done all those things? Would you think she was not a 'real woman'? Would you think that of course a woman couldn't have done all those things?
Your dad sounds like a decent and courageous man, but what's that got to do with 'real men' and 'real women'?
I suspect that your personal sexual preferences are muddying your intellect a bit.

Khandro - // Question Authorrowanwitch // One of the strongest and most outwardly masculine men I knew was gay,//
If by 'gay' you mean a practicing homosexual, you are entitled to your opinion of that person, but how do you think that person could ever be a role model for young boys? //
You seem to have an extremely narrow and specific notion of what your ideal 'role model is'.
You appear convinced that the only 'role model' a gay man could be, is someone who tries his very best to ensure that every boy and young man he encounters, follows his own sexual preferences, to the exclusion of everything else.
And that of course, is garbage of the lowest order.

andy; How little you know of the real world. Homosexual male predators, - young boys !! It has been going on for thousands of years, first recorded by the ancient Greeks.
'The most common form of same-sex relationships between elite males in Greece was paiderastia (pederasty), meaning "boy love". It was a relationship between an older male and an adolescent youth. A boy was considered a "boy" until he was able to grow a full beard. In Athens the older man was called erastes. He was to educate, protect, love, and provide a role model for his eromenos, whose reward for him lay in his beauty, youth, and promise............'

Khandro; Yes, homosexuality is something that's been around forever and will no doubt continue. I can think of worse things than men loving men - men fighting and attacking men, for instance. Why is love and sex hated and feared by some, whereas hate and violence is often lauded under the shelter of patriotism?
Atheist //Why is love and sex hated and feared by some,..// who said that & how does it relate to this thread?
pixie //Certain "male" behaviours that used to be acceptable no longer are//
Have you got an example?
If I lay my cloak over a puddle for a lady to step on as Sir Walter Raleigh did, I'd probably be called (by the woke) a patronising male chauvinist show-off. :0)
