my 11 yo has some verbal and motion tics. She might make a few noises squeaking etc, and doesnt seem to be able to control it, or she might fling her arm out several times in a row, with, again, seemingly no control over it. Personally i dont care particularly, but i do worry that she might get bullied or made fun of and would ideally like her to stop. But how?
My husband also makes odd random noises, and if he's in repose, he might make some odd head movements. Apparently he's been that way since childhood. For me, it just contributes to his essential Mrbenobs-ness

The NHS website seems to suggest that the problem is likely to disappear with the onset of puberty without the need for any intervention:

I had similar when I was young. I used wink for a few seconds randomly, or clench my jaw and make little noises and it did disappear gradually. I really don’t think anything could have stopped it but in hindsight I wonder whether it was a symptom of anxiety?
Dystonia as it is known as.......I'm sure you know.
I can't add anything to the above posters as it is of either emotional cause or stress, very rarely, extremely rarely it presents a neurological disease.
Sorry...that is my lot.
My husband and daughter also have 'tics' when anxious, upset or excited. They wring their hands and my daughter clasps her hands to the side of her face . It's never been a problem as far as I'm aware.
I still wring my hands when anxious. I have a photo of me doing itbon my wedding dsy. Is that a tic? My Dad used to put a finger on one side of his nose on and off when driving. He was a very nervou driver.
Bednobs, Ive been meaning to ask if you managed to get your daughter a suitable watch?
This may be a form of tourettes. Remember not everyone goes around swearing. I developed tics and a tremor and was tested for this but one of my sons has also developed a more severe case. He has vocal tics in the form of grunts but his is definitely due to him developing social anxiety in his late teens. He has learned to cope with this but it still gets worse when he is anxious or stressed. I have heard people wear an elastic band on their wrist which they snap when they feel a tic coming on. Don't know if this helps
