i have had a funny ear infection over christmas, i think. i didn't go to the doctors, but felt a bit dizzy. anyway, today my ear is really annoying me. I feel like i'm underwater! it's gurgling and popping a bit and i feel like i want to shake my head or stick my finger in!. do you think this will go itself?

If you are sure that it was an infection then I strongly suggest that you get it looked into (!) untreated ear infections might not be painful but can cause damage which might take ages to heal.

What ever you do do not stick your finger or anything else in your ear. The symptons you describe do suggest it will clear with time but you may find that the correct use of ear drops may quicken the recovery, but be advised it can take anything from a day or two to a full month before your ear back to normal.

I am deaf and you have my full sympathy my friend, but let me repeat myself ............ do not stick anything in your ear and this includes cotton wool!

Hope it clears soon.

I have just read the post left by qapmoc and yes if you think it is an infection then seek medical advice, an infection will cause some sort of pain or soreness but your symptons suggest your ear is blocked and hopefully will clear itself given time.
Get yourself some nasal drops/spray, Otrivine is very good and you ears will clear up in no time.

thanks everyone for your answers. I went to the doctors in the end, as I know what untreated infections can do.(My step mum is completely deaf - now with two cochlea implants - and it all started with a sore ear).

Anyway, my ear is not infected, but my eusta - me - bob - tubes are blocked. She suggested steam inhalation to help clear them, and I may try happy_face's recommendation.

Don't worry, PhilBy, I was always told never to stick anything in my ear smaller than my elbow!!
