I'm sure there's a basis in dietary intolerance/IBS, but personally I haven't managed to pin it down to any one foodstuff. I know when I'm stressed out it's worse, and the pill certainly made it worse.

It could be all manner of things if its an intolerance. Personally I find the worst culprits are flour (especially white), pork products (including bacon), cheese and other dairy products, mushrooms or oranges. Various foods effect different people in different ways.
I would recommend an elimination diet, cut one type of food out for three or more days and see if the problem persists or if it goes away. If i goes away you've found a possible culprit but there may well be more than one, try again with another food product.
It could also be stress related or indeed be IBS. If it persists its worth going to see your doctor as they will be able to help you.

along with peppermint, there is a tablet sold called buscopan which is a muscle relaxant that works well on bloating and cramp, I use it along with colpermin. The active ingredient is hyoscine.
For an acute episode, I put a hot water bottle on my tummy and take the pills with a hot drink, tea or peppermint tea, Twinings spearmint and chamomile for preference.
Usual caveats apply, read the instructions, don't use if allergic, don't exceed the stated dose, be careful driving and working as it can make you sleepy and affect vision, see the doc if it gets worse or doesn't clear up
