Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?

The needle used to attach the IV drip tube to the "patient" would be sterile just like in a hospital, probably coming out of the package that way.
The additional needles used to put the various injections into the IV tube would probably be sterile because of the packages they came out of.
A possible consideration is the prevention of contamination of the "patient" because there is always a possibility of reprieve before the final injection is made.
