Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?

Surely the needle would simply be removed shortly before use from an already-sterile container, as we find with almost any injection situation. I cannot imagine that a further sterilisation process is gone through in the circumstances.

I agree with Quizmonster - they don't sterilize the needle specially, all needles are sterilized as part of the manufacturing process.

Perhaps if the execution didn't work and the person survived, if they caught something and it was proved to be the needle that infected them - they might sue?

They sterilize it because they use the same needle for each lethal injection.. no really... serious.. Im not joking... OK .. I have no idea why.. and I had no idea they do that.. I would just asume they would take it out of the package like everyother needle is..

also, I heard that they actually put prisoners to sleep first by injection before they actually give the lethal injection............is this right???

I saw a lethal injecion once and the man pee'd him self.. no they didnt put him to sleep. he cryed and shoot.. and it was just so gross to see...

i think most lethal injections are accomplished via a tube that is attached to an IV drip. The needle used to attach the IV drip tube to the "patient" would be sterile just like in a hospital, probably coming out of the package that way.

The additional needles used to put the various injections into the IV tube would probably be sterile because of the packages they came out of.

A possible consideration is the prevention of contamination of the "patient" because there is always a possibility of reprieve before the final injection is made.
