I went to a christening on Saturday which ended with everyone back at the house for a BBQ. Around 11.30pm we all decided to have a singalong. It was a good laugh, but we all found it difficult to find a song that everybody would know. What song would you have chosen?

I would have struck up with The Lonely Goatherd, but then I always do.
99 bottles of beer on the wall
99 bottles of beeeeer,
you take one down,
hand it around
98 bottles of beer on the wall......

see, this is why we bought singstar!

don't you find that most people only know the chorus of most songs and the verses get random words thrown in that fit in with the music?
Funny that, whiffey..I would have suggested Favourite Things! along with Tubthumping, Come Up And See Me (Make Me Smile) and Remember you're a Womble.
hi ho silver lightning.

I'm only giving 3 stars to the songs I know all the words to!

We actually sang 'You are my sunshine' and 'American Pie'. I also started off the Banana Boat Song. "Day-O! Daaaay-O! Daylight come and me wan' go hooome..." :o)
Here's the first verse (!), surely worth one star.

High on a hill was a lonely goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Loud was the voice of the lonely goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

So, what then are the lyrics to Hi Ho Silver Lightning ?
whiffey, I'm sure a man of your obvious intelligence (ahem) realises only too well that the song referred to was Hi Ho SIlver Lining, but anyhoo, here are the lyrics you requested:

You're everywhere and nowhere baby, that's where you're at
Running down a bumpy hillside, in your hippy hat
Flying across the country, and getting fat
Saying everything is groovy, when your tires are flat

And it's high ho silver lining, no matter where you go now baby
I see your sun is shining
But I won't make a fuss, though it's obvious

Flies are in your pea soup baby, they're waving at me
Anything you want is yours now, only nothing's for free
Lies are gonna get you someday, just wait and see
So open up your beach umbrella, while you're watching TV

And it's high ho silver lining, no matter where you go now baby
I see your sun is shining
But I won't make a fuss, though it's obvious

And it's high ho silver lining, no matter where you go now baby
I see your sun is shining
But I won't make a fuss, though it's obvious

And it's high ho silver lining, no matter where you go now baby
I see your sun is shining
But I won't make a fuss, though it's obvious

And it's high ho silver lining, no matter where you go now baby
I see your sun is shining
But I won't make a fuss, though it's obvious
How about Y.M.C.A?? You could do all the actions as well!

Or Abba's Dancing Queen,& Money Money Money
My mum used to go out with Jeff Beck..a cruel twist of fate meant he didn't become my dad ~ ******!
Happy Birthday

Hahahahahahaha! 4getmenot!!
Well everyone knows it, it always get the crowd going at any parties I've been to :-)
Its just I've always noticed people at Wakes never really seem to know the words.
Depending on levels of drunken-ness and the ability to make up lyrics as you go along and being of Irish descent where we are never short of a song or ten, I would have belted out the first few lines to

Brown Eyed Girl Van Morrison
Dirty Ol Town The Pogues
The Tree Toad Song - ?
The Fly Song Foster & Allen
Aon Focail Eile - Richie Kavanagh
I Useta Love Her - The Saw Doctors

These would be intermingled with a solo by an elder relative such as Fields of Athenry, Danny Boy or Spancil Hill etc. But if I was with my mates I would sing these too. And maybe American Pie / Hi Ho Silver / Come On Eileen
Octavious I would never be able to join in then I've only heard of one of them songs :-)
I wouldn't worry 4getmenoot, after a few seconds you would be able to join in the chorus (and actions where appropriate) with the rest of us like you have known them for years. Otherwise you could always start singing your own song.... something by The Carpenters perhaps? And don't say 'who?' !
