The Pope has announced that remarried Catholics should live like 'brother and sister' if they haven't got an annulment first. The official line from the Vatican is that remarried Catholics should "live their relationship in fidelity to the demands of God's law, as friends, as brother and sister." The Catholic Church does not recognize civil divorce as a real divorce. Has anyone had experience of this sort of situation? Do you see it as a reasonable expectation in today's society?

The Catholic church shud be disbanded and all their money given to charity. They are a disgrace. You have the pope and priests telling us what we shud be doing when there are so many priests abusing kids. They shud keep their noses out and get their own house in order.

The Pope is entitled to say what he like�s aint he? Providing it is in the doctrine of the Catholic Church of course. We don�t have to agree to it or accept it. He, rightly or wrongly, has the belief that for Catholic's, divine law takes precedence over civil law and therefore this is an issue that really only matters to Catholic�s who play cow-toe to the Vatican law. But even then, those that do would probably follow the lengthy process of annulment, thus this Q is pointless!

As far as the church is concerned, the real problem has not been civil divorce but re-marriage. That is the point at which you can no longer receive communion. Some priests might exercise this rule, but not all will as when someone re-marries, they might tend to take their whole family out of the church with them and this has and will lead to a diminution of Catholic congregations.

Civil divorce is the only way of ensuring certain legal rights, the care of the children, or the protection of inheritance, thus they allow it with the annulment following. The catechism of the Catholic Church is that marriage is a sacrament. It�s a case of practicing what you preach, although I know several Roman Catholic priests who would not adhere fully to this rule and forsake their congregation, but recognise the demands and desires of a modern society.

I think the pope should realise that we actually live in the 21. centuary, and use his influence to make the world a better place, like Jesus intended him to, instead of trying to stop people having some harmless fun!

what they should do then as a side line is set up a proper little office next to the divorce courts and send a person there to make sure it is all done to suit them. It is not legal to marry in a Catholic Church unless there is a Registrar from the register office there to make it legal, so the Catholic Church should reverse the role and sit in on a Divorce and perhaps say a few well chosen prayers as the annulment is announced.

I am catholic, divorced by my first wife and remarried. My children are not recognised as legitimate in the eyes of the church and I was considered to be living in sin with my 2nd wife, especially as she is Jewish. Just about to divorce again,so they can please themselves what they think, I couldn't give a toss.
