Jewish womens hair

Before I start, this post isn`t a mickey take nor anything untoward, but i`m curious to know why married jewish women shave/cut their hair short and then wear wigs.
I work in a jewish community of manchester and i`ve always wondered why but havn`t asked out of respect or maybe embarrassment

I used to work for a Jewish man when I left school & was always intrigued as to why his wife wore a wig too!

She was very attractive, but you could just about tell her hair wasn't 'her own'!

I never knew they did wear wigs until I went into a jewish womans bedroom ;) LOL, curiosity wil get the best of me if i`ve not had the answer why and i`ll ask one of them tomorrow

I remember them bringing in hard boiled eggs & me having to go out & buy their matza's & bagels for lunch. Happy days!

I could live with having an hard boiled egg from my customers Smudge, but they insist on giving me Gefilte fish and some kind of potato cake ewwwwwww not the nicest thing i`ve ever tasted:(

I suspect ultimately it's much the same as Muslim women covering up. Christian women are supposed to do it in church at least. The reason for it all, I suppose, is that men get all excited at women's hair... and obviously instead of learning to control their own excitement they find it more convenient to control the women's appearance.

Jewish women do not crop or shave their hair. Under their wigs they have their own long hair.

Traditionally, Judaism considered women's hair to be erotic, and only her husband would be allowed to see her 'crowning glory'.

Until quite recently the custom was to cover the head with scarves, but as wigs became more natural looking, this is now the preferred 'head dress' of many Jewish women. They can look glamourous and observe their religious customs.

This is mainly observed by Orthodox Jewish women. I am a Reform Jew (and a really rubbish one at that!) and wouldn't dream of covering my hair for anyone!
