Help ! I'm going mad trying to pick a name for a baby that my hubby , parents , in-laws and I can all agree on. I'm due my baby mid December and although we don't know the sex of the baby , picking a girl's name was easy - the boy's name is causing chaos ! I like Callum but hubby says that there are too many and he'll be forever known as Callum G. For every other name I say , my mother finds some bizarre rhyming slang. I feel like throttling them all. Please help with some suggestions and why you think that that would be a good name for a baby. No wacky names that scream "please bully me" please. Many thanks x

Enigma and Pondereer....have to laugh at hubbys choices of names! He thinks Callum is common??...well I have to tell him that here in Scotland, Jack, Ben, Ryan and Liam are VERY common. My M-in-law is a registrar, so I know what the current trend in names is.....sorry Ponderer, but your little one would be Liam G (aaargh...Liam gallacher!), or Ben G (which sounds like a dogs name?!). Good luck again guys, hope you find a compromise or, failing that, fingers crossed for a 3rd girl!!! xxxx
I quite like the name "Nathan", which means Gift
Hi! I know i'm still ib my teens, i've already decided the name for my future child if its a boy, and that is Jefferson. I think it sounds a little old fashioned, which would make it unusual but can be shortened to Jeff. I've always liked the name Jeff, but feared having to call my child Geoffrey (not sure of the spelling for it even). This solves the problem! I can't think of any slang names that it could be changed to, but your mum might still be able to find some. This is just a suggestion, it might not be your cup of tea, but maybe you'll conisder it? xx
I like .. Morgan Kyle Aaron Sean Ryan Andrew

Oh my god Jills - you are so right. Do you know that I hadn't even paid much attention to what the initials would be if we called our son Ben ( like that was ever going to happen ! )- As well as giving him the name Ben G , making him definitely sound like a dog , he would also be a BG (Beegee)so hubby has DEFINITELY had it with that. This just emphasises my opinion of this name sounding of the pooch variety ! We also live in Scotland and my best friend is a senior playworker with an after school care organisation and so keeps me up to speed on the latest trends. Unfortunately , she is adding to my headache by chipping in her tuppeny bit , telling me that just like some people born under certain astrological signs diplay so called certain astrological traits , children born with certain names behave accordingly , ie Ryans , Callums and Stevens are all tearaways. What utter nonsense ! Nothing to do with the way in which you bring your kids up then eh ? Shady_jady - wow ! Can't believe you've thought of a name for your first child already and you're still in your teens. When I was a teenager ( My god it feels so long ago. I'm nearly 29 and feel sooooooo old !!! )the last thing on my mind was kids. I wouldn't even have known which way to hold them up lol ! ( Probably by the feet !!! ) With all due respect , I don't think that my hubby would go for Jefferson - not when he's slating the name Callum. I think that that might just be a bit unusual for him. Good choice though. Thanks for your suggesions too casey. Lots to think about.

Oh tantan I nearly forgot about your suggestion. I do like that name actually but hubby says no. He's such a fusspot !!!
I like Samuel, Jacob and Jamie, but there are tons more nice girls' names than boys'. If you fancy going for something a bit more 'creative' you can always have it as a middle name. I changed my middle name cos I wanted something more exciting!
hi enigma, i am posting this answer for the second time. i hate to rain on your parade, but why do you not choose a name that you and your hubby like, forget the rest of the people. when my husband and i were expecting we decided to take turns picking names for the babies. so, the first one was Janette, i picked. the next, Adriana, he picked. the next, Gabriela, i picked. and you know what? everyone loves their names. i know it does not exactly answer your question, but i thought of telling you what my experience was. good luck choosing the right name.
It's got to be cute (for when he's a baby), cool (for when he's a teenager), serious (for when he's an adult) and distinguished (for when he's a doddering old fossil getting in everyone's way on the bus). I've always been fond of 'Jake' in all it's permutations (Jakey, Jake, Jacob) or Zack (Zacky, Zack, Zacharius). Failing that, how about Xavier. Or Otto. Erm. Or Dave.
I called my son Nathan which means gift from god he's 11 now and hasnt had any trouble with rhyming slang or any other thing from kids at school
I am forever thinking of names for when I have kids one day...... Owen Ryan Jared Daniel Tom Ewan Gavin Bradley Nathan Harrison Gary I seem to like most names with a N on the end, I don't know why!
I'm going through the same process - here are a few you may like Tristan Archie Ralf Alfie Ieuan - ok, this is a welsh name pronounced yiyan... Iwan/Ewan - the welsh for john youwan or eewan (thats how the welsh pronounce it) I have had a big fight with significant other about the name Hugo - i'm sorry - but that child would be picked on.. There not all that common - but i think that they are very cute!! Please let me know if you like them!!
Ok here's a few that my boyfriend and i have agreed on if/ when we have children: Ralf Alfie Tristan Archie Ieuan (welsh - pronounced yiyan) Iwan/Ewan (welsh) the welsh pronounce it eewan whereas the english pronounce it youwan hope this helps
i know what your going through its not easy we have three boys one of which is called lloyd we thought this was unusual he is now 14 and he has never been bullied over his name and we havent come across many other lloyds we also liked it because its not a name you can shorten from a 14 year olds point of view he likes it because as he says its not poofy and his the only one in his school with that name good luck.
what about zach or zak not many of those about go for something that seems to suit them at every age from baby to adulthood if its any help my brother is called darrell.
Jon-Paul? It is my name and I for one am rather fond of it. My son is named Jon-Luca, which again, I kinda like, but is not a patch on mine ;o) Best of luck to you both. Parenthood is the most wonderful thing in the world x
Great question, and wonderful answers..!! I won't bore you with my personal favourites... Ohh, OK then, I will..! :o) 1) David (clean, solid and Dave to his best mates 2) Daniel (ditto, and Dan..) 3) Joshua (ever more popular, and still very modern and masculine). For the record, I think you should ask your mother to provide her own 10 favourites, and then MIND HER OWN BUSINESS, as you will never forgive her if you borrow one of her suggestions and then regret it later. And on those days when you worry that you might mess it up completely, just remember that a boy who attended my secondary school had parents whose asylum had allowed them to name him James. Their surname was... BOND..!!
Aaron or Adam would put him probably first in his class alphabetically which would mean he would have to take the lead in some activities etc (if they still do it that way). He'd end up being used to taking the lead which can only be good. Worked for me anyway!
your choice in the end
what about cameron its a bit like callum but more unusual.
