In desperation I tried every quack remedy there was - including the quackiest of all, homeopathy. None worked.
I first got it at 26. After having two or three attacks a year for four years or so (and being presecribed endomethicin (sp?) I was referred to a consultant who did a load of tests and prescribed Allupurinol.
Apparently, I was pre-disposed to gout due to a defective enzyme which was probably inherited from my father - certainly I wasn't getting it due to my lifestyle.
Since I've been on Allupurinol, I haven't had any attacks. Fantastic drug.
My advice would be to ignore all the quack remedies and get yourself down the Drs and get on Allupurinol.

I am sorry to hang onto other ABer's coatails, but I have to agree that allopurinol is the way to go.
I had gout at age 70 (17 years ago) anf boy was it painful.
However, not much sympathy was forthcoming as too many people though it was a subject for humour!
My GP prescribed allopurinol and it worked wonders. He has left it on my surgery prescription, but I have never needed it again.

Look especially at the dietary hints,as this can help keep gout away, after medication has finished.
