Islam is - believe it or not - a peaceful religion, and thousands of Muslims are not remotely interested in terrorism. We cannot tar all people with the same brush, and extremists and radicals are to be found in many different groups. The few make it difficult for the majority, as happens in so many walks of life. I would say that your second post is representative of the vast silent majority.
123everton - “Which one is the true face of Islam? Or is it really just a question of your own personal prejudices?”

The first news report that you provided a link to does not mention Islam at all. You're asking about other people's prejudices and yet you seem to have already decided that Islamic fundamentalists were responsible for the explosions in Dagestan.

Regardless, if it turns out that Islamic fundamentalists are responsible for the explosions in Dagestan, then I would suggest that both stories are examples of the true face of Islam – it being schizophrenic in nature.

The first symptom of its inherent schizophrenia being the belief that Islam holds a greater moral superiority over other beliefs (or non-belief) and that it is permissible – and actually desirable – to wage holy war, or Jihad, on infidels. The second symptom being the hand-wringing, 'religion of peace' types who publicly proclaim that killing non-believers is wicked and evil whist simultaneously clinging to a doctrine that preaches death to apostates, Jews, homosexuals, adulterers, etc.
Isn't that like looking at American Fundamentalists and the Archbishop of Canterbury and asking which is the true face of Christianity?
That's my viewpoint too, jake - you can't take extremes and say that applies to everyone!
Which is the true face of Christianity?

Both the KKK and Mother Teresa claim to be Christian
Dunno about patriotism being the last refuge of the scoundrel, it seems like organised religion might have claimed that role already.
I find most religions have good and not-so-good sides. The prohttp://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/04/m

arise when religious leaders make their own (warped) interpretations, be it out of fear or lust for power over others. I often wonder what God must think of his 'ground staff' who misuse the gullibility of the masses.

sorry 'bout the wrong link - I'd sent it to somebody else earlier.
Should have checked ;-))
I find that most religions have bad, very bad and totaly irrelevant sides.

I give ground to people like the Salvation Army so its not all

I agree that Christianity is just as bad as Islam as I have pointed out many times both in this section and the Religion and Spirituality section. All three of the Abrahamic religions preach peace and love while simultaneously teaching intolerance, division and violence.

The original question was about the Islamic faith and I answered it in those terms.
And it didn't make much sense then

You refered to a "true" face that was schizophrenic

Maybe it's late but that sounds like an oxymoron to me
If a person (or an organisation) is schizophrenic then to describe that nature as being its 'true face' is not a contradiction and therefore not an oxymoron.

Just so we're clear, how would you describe an organisation that preaches tolerance and love in one breath and violence and murder in the next?
Tell you what, if it makes you happy, replace the word schizophrenic with the word hypocritical and the word schizophrenia with hypocrisy.

My main answer still conveys exactly the same meaning.
Have you ever actually met any muslims Birdie?

I mean spoken to any got to know them

Because none of the one's I've known bear any resemblance to that
The argument that 'I haven't met a religious person who killed me for my belief' is clearly a self defeating one.

You, like myself, have been very lucky in that we haven't met any fundamentalist Islamic morons nor any fundamentalist Christian muppets, or anyone else who thinks we are less than human and deserve to die because we chose to believe in something different from themselves.

But you surely don't deny that people like this exist do you?

The reason they exist is purely down to religious teachings.

If you take the Koran, read it and augment your own morality with it's twisted version of what is right and what is wrong, then you will have to believe that it's permissible (some might say desirable) to kill a person who ceases to be a Muslim and becomes a non-believer. You have to believe this, as Mohammed tells us that this is the will of God and that the Koran is immutable.

The fact is, religion poisons the minds of mankind and tells the appalling lie that without religion, mankind would sink into barbarism. Conveniently forgetting that organised religion has only existed for a few thousand years and that mankind got on perfectly well (sublimely demonstrated by the fact that you and I exist) without Mohammed, Moses, Jesus, Abraham, etc. for many millennia before these self-proclaimed holy men appeared.

I know you don't agree Jake, but I think that religion poisons everything.
I think everyone has got it wrong.Someone long long ago invented God just to keep the masses in order. Wow What a blunder he made!

Having said that I would never wish to cause harm to anyone and if at anytime I can do someone a good turn I will. Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you cry alone. Life is too short to make wars. We only have one so lets make the most of it and be happy.

The terrorists in Russia are separitists, they wish to leave the Russian Federation and found their own country.
I have seen it several times written on this site "why don't the Muslims demonstrate against the terrorists?"
So they do, and, in so doing they are described as hypocritical etc, they can't win.
If nothing else people who are virulently anti religious demonstrate succinctly that no matter what people do they'll be criticised for it, it's just that sometimes they use the language of liberality.
There are lots of political organisations that assassinate individuals and slaughter indiscriminately, try large swathes of Africa and Nepal.
123everton - “There are lots of political organisations that assassinate individuals and slaughter indiscriminately, try large swathes of Africa and Nepal”

Yes there are. But that says nothing whatsoever about religion and you're attempting to muddy the waters of debate.

Religious people do evil things because of their religion, not despite it. Ken Bigley's head was cut from his neck by a man who believed he had the God given right to do so.

Why do people find it so hard to understand that religion is not a force for good but is a force for evil? Religion attempts to subjugate its adherents and proclaims that anyone who doesn't believe in their particular brand of religious belief is an infidel. It infects the minds of those who either can't think rationally for themselves or those who relish the idea of direct power over others.

All religions are the same. The words, situations and characters may change, but the message doesn't. It says, “Believe in me exclusively. I am the bearer of the only truth. Convert the unbelievers or kill them if they refuse to believe. Oh, and if anyone leaves our club, kill them. And kill gays too, I don't like them either.”

Etc. Etc.

Religion is all about hate. It's about conquest. It's about control.

Can you give me one example of a good deed done by a religious person that could not be done by an atheist?
Question Author
In answer to your question, no I couldn't, it's a stupid question.
The point is, that I've seen it written on this site "why don't the Muslims protest against terrorism?" then when they do, it's an example of hypocrisy etc.
Your take on religion is entirely different to my experience, my expression and those of ALL the people I've met of whatever creed. The only ones who have launched into diatribes about God have always been atheists, so who's got the problem in reality?
As for hatred and control, politics defines hatred much more succinctly and controls the masses far more succesfully than religion does, or ever has.
