I've just heard this phrase again and have no idea of it's meaning.

The media tend to use the expression "confirmed bachelor" to imply that someone is gay
I would say a confirmed bachelor is one who has no intention of getting married ever.
Ditto micmak...
Yes, absolutely, because he`s gay :-)
I'd agree with micmak - a man would could have got married but has chosen not to.

well there's a surprise, just joined!
I wonder if frank is a confirmed bachelor?
237SJ - not at all. My Uncle was a confirmed bachelor and straight. He just didn't want to give up his 'do what I want' lifestyle.
I had a very good friend, ditto - had lots of chances but enjoyed his own company best in the end.
Being a confirmed bachelor has got absolutely nothing to do with being gay.
Strange, isn't it - you don't get a "confirmed spinster" - it seems to have a different connotation that the woman never got any offers, which is far from being the case. "Confirmed bachelor" also suggests that they are not in any sort of partnership either, not just unmarried.
I had a good friend who was a bachelor as well. His circumstances changed and he ended up getting married. I never called him a confirmed bachelor because there was no guarantee he was never going to get married even though he didn`t seem interested. A confirmed bachelor would be someone who has no chance whatsoever of getting married. However, regardless of our experiences, my comment was that when people (mainly the media) use that expression, they are implying someone is gay without libelling themselves
I still don't agree with you. A confirmed bachelor is someone who has decided they do not want to marry and/or settle down.

Humans have a tendency to change their minds at times though...
I'm with ummm on this one.
Nothing to do with being gay. Many gay people enter into civil partnerships so you can't say that they are confirmed bachelors for being gay. Prime example of a confirmed bachelor is Sir Cliff Richard. Although he has had some relationships he has never found someone on a long-term basis and probably never will. I suppose another example is a monk.
Only marriage changes bachelor status and the confirmed has vowed never to wed. How many bed a bachelor :-p
I know someone who is a confirmed batchelor, he is not gay,he had a few girlfriends but seems to have decided that the single life is enough for him. He has always lived at home and for about 10 years as a carer for his mother until she died, I don't think he knows now how to share his life with someone else now. I also feel that he's missed some of the socialising and friendships because he was a carer.

I have an idea that Sir Cliff is living with a man who is/was a monk (or priest).Tigger.
Being gay doesn't enter into it. A man can still have many relationships with women, but simply choose not to settle down,as it is not for him.It certainly has never meant an unmarried man who does not like, or feel attracted to women.
My definition of confirmed batchelor is a middle aged man who still lives with his mum and train spots as a hobby!! eek.....
