I've just heard this phrase again and have no idea of it's meaning.

I never called him a confirmed bachelor because there was no guarantee he was never going to get married even though he didn`t seem interested. A confirmed bachelor would be someone who has no chance whatsoever of getting married. However, regardless of our experiences, my comment was that when people (mainly the media) use that expression, they are implying someone is gay without libelling themselves
Nothing to do with being gay. Many gay people enter into civil partnerships so you can't say that they are confirmed bachelors for being gay. Prime example of a confirmed bachelor is Sir Cliff Richard. Although he has had some relationships he has never found someone on a long-term basis and probably never will. I suppose another example is a monk.
I know someone who is a confirmed batchelor, he is not gay,he had a few girlfriends but seems to have decided that the single life is enough for him. He has always lived at home and for about 10 years as a carer for his mother until she died, I don't think he knows now how to share his life with someone else now. I also feel that he's missed some of the socialising and friendships because he was a carer.
I have an idea that Sir Cliff is living with a man who is/was a monk (or priest).Tigger.
