I'm planning to drop university (or take a year out...) But I was wanting to do it around October time as that works better for me.... however my student loan is supposed to go in at end of sept... if I drop will they ask for it back as I won't actually be at uni to use it?

Why don't people just answer the question that clipclop asked rather than preach at her and express their views on what she MAY be doing. She didn't ask to be lectured.

yes. if you don't go....you can't have the money and they will demand it back. my advice would not to be to take a year out....for some courses this will stop all forms of future funding. read the gov.org website for details.

clip clop....my answer (and some others) are right. if you stop your funding, you are dropping out. you cannot restart a student grant payment....it is a full time 3-4 yr course and if you do not complete it in that time, you will have to fund the rest yourself. think very carefully before dropping out. the second yr is often the hardest, but if you motor through, it'll be done in no time. unless you can afford £6-9k per year to finish....do NOT drop out or take a gap year. they will charge you at the new rate of funding!!!!
it's a nursing course i think. They WILL ask for it back
You could offer to return the money for the Maintenance Loan if it's already been paid by the time you hand your notice in. However the fees element will be paid to the university- I think around a third is paid direct to the University early in the academic year so you need to let the SLC (or whatever it's called) as soon as you know so there may be time to stop the payment.
You may also find you are committed to paying accommodation fees if you have signed up to that
Clipclop is about to read all your replies. Thanks guys.
Looking at your last thread, clipclop, you've had an understandably hard first year - I hope you decide to stick with it. It will get better....
It's just a shame tht clipclop didn't get such sensible answers at the beginning instead of people making accusations - oneperson in particular.
I'm sure the SLC get confirmation from the Uni that you are on the course so you wouldn't get any in Janaury anyway (it's paid per term isn't it?). I don't know if they'd ask for it back straightaway.
Someone very close to my heart was in a position of dropping out after the beginning of the third year and for reasons I am not prepared to discuss existed on the student loan which was not claimed back. But that person is now paying that loan back.

Not being funny Pizza but I think you have missed some of the points that have been made about us not knowing clipclop's circumstances

In NO WAY shape or form do I have to justify myself to such small minded people.... however, A little part of me is going to enjoy shutting you all up as (as Lofty quite rightly said) you have all read this question wrong and jumped down my throat... I think some of you actually just sit about on AB waiting to be a pain in the backside to people who are actually looking for a little INNOCENT advice and help!

Sunning myself on a beach for a year?! Who in the world does that?! And when exactly did I say that... presumptuous and wrong!

Thinking that I would take this money and run... again wrong!

Taxpayers money... yes... is it for free like these skanky people claiming benefits?! NO!!!

lcg76 you are wrong in your information. You CAN re-start it as millions of students do 'course interrupt', basically another way of saying 'a year out' and the course and its payments can be completed up to 5 years... and the £9000 fees doesn't apply to me.
My situation.... not that its ANY of your business but I've found that a chronic, sometimes debilitating, illness is affecting my ability to devote 100% of myself to my nursing degree,
Recent bereavement of my father hasn't helped (shockingly!) being 350 miles away from mum is hard when we haven't had proper time to grieve,
No savings or financial backing from mum or Uni because funnily enough you have to be a single parent or from another country to get help from anything to do with the government! (im not even gonna get onto the subject of the feeble excuse of a job that would be waiting for me at the end of this Nursing degree is I carry on/come back!)
Those issues topped with about 4-5 more are making me consider this NOW... it was not a pre-planned thing... sometimes life throws you a curve ball and you just try to do the best you can do with the situation you have been placed in... so please, take this as a lesson to all of you who mis-judged me, you are ALL wrong in your comments, none of you have even touched upon the REAL reason that this might have to happen, because let me tell you... moving over 350 miles away from my family as soon as my dad died was NOT an easy decision.
All I can say at this point is to thank those lovely people who have read this as it was meant to be read... you are true AnswerBankers and I think you are all lovely people who we need more of in everyday life, Thank you guys for understanding! I look forward to hearing your well educated comments again in the future and will continue to ignore (from now on) those un-educated people who see what they want to see!
Much love to you, be blessed and take care xxx
*Stands up and applauds*.
I hope you work things out.

Thank you for posting that clipclop. It needed to be said. I wish you well in whatever you choose to do.
And how nice of Pizza to apologise. Well done. It was probably some of the earlier postings that caused Pizza to jump to conclusions.
