Will they ask for my student loan back?

I'm planning to drop university (or take a year out...) But I was wanting to do it around October time as that works better for me.... however my student loan is supposed to go in at end of sept... if I drop will they ask for it back as I won't actually be at uni to use it?

My student son HAS to attend to get his grant/loan/whatever they call it. If he doesn't go, they stop it. full stop.

It depends whether they know or not I suppose. The point is if you get it you will have to pay it back regardless, so you are not exactly stealing or you. Plenty of students drop out of Uni for one reason or another. You won't get another loan though when you go back (if you do go back) so you will have to have contingencies to cope.

And Sandy, Gap years are not always about lazing on foreign beaches! Far from it. And good luck anyway to kids who take gap years to travel. They should grab all the chances they can. You can't do it when you are older with responsibilies

I know 2 mature students that dropped out and didn't get chased for their students loans.

I don't know how much they earn now so that might have changed.

I would be very disappointed if they don't want it back, or at least suspend it if you decide to interrupt for a year. This is taxpayers' money, by not using it you are depriving another student of that money. Where I work with the universities with students who are on bursaries, the bursary stops if they are not studying. Leaving it until October is too late, IMO - entry for the programmes I'm involved with closes on 5th September, at which point the money for the fees is handed over. You need to do it now, if you are going to.

mike...exactly....it was a privilege, but now it is looked upon as a right. To drop out either temporarily or permanently was the exception rather than the rule.

One doe not have to strive to get to Uni now (in the main) it comes far too easily.

I might have the wrong ABer but I think there are a number of personal reasons why clipclop wants to pause her studies. I don't think she is looking to pocket the loan per se, just get a measure of when it has to be repaid.

I know noting of student loans but I'm pretty sure that within the Ts&Cs this eventuality will be covered.

Yes, as ummmm says a lot of students drop out and sometimes for very good reasons. They are still saddled with the loan. It's not a if they are thieves.

Clip clop is expectig her student loan to go in September and MAY have to take a year out in October for reasons that we have no right to ask for or know. She is just wanting to know, in my opinion what will happen about the loan if that happens. I agree with Eccles. Some of you are just so quick to condemn.

I know who clipclop is, and the past circumstances - but if she wants to drop out, she needs to do it now. It's not right to be paid the loan due to being registered in September, if she has no intention of studying this coming year. Besides, it might mean that for a later year when she resumes, she gets no financial support, and in future that might be even more difficult to manage.
