Does anyone know why they tell you not to wind babies anymore?

Baby G is the windiest baby you could imagine. He farts like a trooper and if I put him over my shoulder after a feed, within a minute or so he's belching for England.

I cannot understand the mindset now that babies don't need to be winded.

Andy, thanks. I've read a fair few web pages on various stuff but trust me, I don't own a single book nor have I ever bought a magazine related to pregnancy, babies or mothering.

I decided to go into this essentially blindfolded and I think it paid off in the long-run. I kinda learnt as I went on.

NoMercy, just go with your instincts - they seem to have served you well until now! I don't know where you came across the 'don't wind babies' advice, but just ignore it.
Question Author
From all the midwives and so-called 'health workers', NACW, and as to ignorning ... I have.

Thanks to everyone who posted their thoughts.
Just go with your instinct on whether baby needs a burp or not. Breastfed babies often get into an uncomfortable (for mum) sucking rhythm when they need a burp. Bottle fed babies may visibly chomp at the end of the teat if they have wind. Then there are the telltale gurgling sounds. I have seen some parents wind babies far too vigorously though!
We had two children and they were totally different. What worked for one didn't with the other.

Anyone who says there is a 'right' way to look after them is talking rubbish.

Do whatever works for your little darling.

I guess you're right, Hopkirk. I often wonder if I had another child, would the pregnancy be completely different. I don't think I'll chance it to be honest - I don't think I'd survive another one. Besides, a C-section would be a given this time, having had one last time, and the risk of cord prolapse would be much higher having suffered that previously.

Thanks for all the answers.
You're doing it right NM. Some babies need a bit of help. some don't.
Think they may have thrown away the key on that one .(English language)
I winded mine but in reality it was just cuddle time.
Question Author
Yes I suppose it's more like a cuddle for me. I think gently applying pressure to his tummy is all that's needed.
My daughter was a very sicky baby. She'd spew what looked like a whole feed. The doctor said she was just greedy.
Question Author
Aye, dribble chops has done that a couple of time. It's usually during a growth spurt when he has an insatiable appetite and demands more food, only to chuck it back up as soon as he's finished.
I just realised...you are back to yourself again. ;)

I don't remember specifically winding Lil Pasta...she wasn't particularly burpy. Now colic...her dad perfected the colic hold.
Forget the above..not sure how I landed on a 2 month old thread...*confused in Plymouth*
