my little boy (20 months) has been told by various family members that feet are `tootsies` , hands are `dannies` and teeth are `pegs` where do all these come from and what do people call private parts? we say `willy` for a boy but what do people call girls bits? this may seem a weird question but I cant imagine my baby son saying `penis` or `vagina` at his age.what can one call them instead?

we've always referred to our little boys 'bits' as his 'pinky' and his 'nuts' , and our little girls 'bit' as her 'foofoo'.

I'm not entirely certain why, but I ended up using 'todger' and 'doofer' for my son's and daughter's respective bits. Todger isn't really a problem, but my mum-in-law calls her TV remote a doofer, so that's caused a laugh or two in our house.

Now they're at school my 4 year old has at some stage had a chat with her teacher and announced to all and sundry at the local swimming pool that 'Daddy has a penis' - which is all good and well but sounds a bit bizarre when said so loudly by such a little girl.....it made me laugh, and I don't object to them knowing the proper names, but nicknames sound so much nicer and less clinical. I mean, I don't refer to mine as a vagina so why should they?

I have to say I agree that the words vagina and penis are far too 'formal' to be coming from the mouths of toddlers. My little girl is 3 and she likes to point out (frequently, unfortunatly) that her dad has a 'tail' and she has a 'tush'. To be honest the word vagina isnt a word I would use unless I was at the doctors-I know it is its proper name but there are much better alternatives to use when you're grown up-never mind when you're 3.

I do believe that children should know the proper terms for their bits but agree that they don't necessarily have to use them all the time. My mum always used Minnie and Willy for girl's and boy's bits. A funny story: My mum took my niece to see Santa a few years ago. When he asked what she wanted for Christmas she replied "A willy like my brother's". Her brother had just learned to stand and pee, something she thought looked like great fun.

When I was little my mum always referred to a penis as a 'doomiedangle'!  and a vagina as 'flower' or 'lily'!!  Ha ha!  (Probably still does - they don't come up in conversation much to find out how she terms them now!)

In Liverpool, a girl's private part is called a "flower" which always makes me giggle, to think that when they grow up a sexual partner may say "Open your petals darling, I'm coming for your nectar!"
