I wouldn't worry to much about it. The very same thing happened to me when I was about 30 weeks or so.
My midwife was fully booked the day of my appointment so i just made one with the doctor. When I went in I could see she was looking at me funny and when I hopped up on the bed she had a worried look in her face, which didn't exactly put me at ease. Then she measured me and said I looked very small for how many weeks I was and advised I go for a scan.
I went for a scan and everything was fine and for the doctor panicing me about the size of my baby I had a healty baby girl weighing 8lb 8oz.
You could put it down to a number of things. She could've just measured you differently from the usual lady. The baby could be tucked into your spine - thats was what happened in my case. Also with me I suffered really bad morning sickness and lost over a stone so I was smaller in myself which probably didn't help
Was it another midwife or doctor that you seen? I have heard that doctors tend to get you worried as they dont normally deal with pregnant women

Same thing happened to me my midwife sent me for a growth scan at 32 weeks cause i didn't have a huge bump, radiographer said baby was only slightly underweight for dates. She was 7 pounds 15 when she was born and even when I was in labour my midwife commented that my bump was "all baby" meaning I wasn't huge. The same thing happened to my sister with her second daughter and she was 8 pounds at birth. Don't worry about these things if there was anything wrong it would have been detected long before 30 weeks. I sometimes think the health profesionals are just justifying their positions!
Sounds like you had a pretty rough time with sickness. Once the baby is born I'm sure you'll be thankful. it wasn't nice at the time but I'm still a stone and a half lighter than i was before I was pregnant!!! So some good came out of it
Yeah, its not very nice that they panic you like that
Do you have a date for your scan? Looking back now, it was good in a way (after all the panacing was over) because I got an extra scan at 35 weeks which not many folk get, so its an extra picture for the baby book

If your worried about birth defects of any sort you should make sure to take the recommended amount of folic acid
