My daughter is graduating from uni in July and I'm not sure what to wear. Want to look nice, but not overdressed.
Any suggestions? Also do male guests usually wear suits?

Wear a nice dress or not too formal suit. No need to over dress though. I went to my daughter's in London last September....I wore a slightly above knee dress with toning tights and knee high bots. This was in London. Location can make a difference maybe......
Most men were in suits. The graduates dress similarly.
*boots*....lol
smart casual, about the same level as a job interview or a wedding where you are not close family but no hat. Suit and tie for a man or smart blazer and tie
Dress as you would for a night at the opera, theatre or ballet.

i.e. you're not going to be 'performer', per se, but it still looks good to adopt the social conventions of others. (That's particularly important when it comes to the 'parent & daughter' photos. Gents in suits, and ladies with hats, look good alongside proud graduates in gowns).

Thanks both, that's the sort of thing I had in mind ( apart from the knee high bots of course!)
In that case I already have a suitable dress that I wore to a wedding last year :-)
*ladies with hats*??

nooooooo....and there were none at UCL last September, either.
Unless every one was slumming that day... ;-))

Ooh, woofgang is saying "no hat", and Chris is saying "hat", which is it? Don't want to be the only one in a hat, on the other hand wouldn't want to do a Samantha Cameron!
University College, London?
Well, that's not a proper university anyway, is it? ;-)

(who turned down an offer from KCL, in favour of one from Sheffield!)
I would not define smart casual as hats....and as I said-I did not see any hats in evidence at my daughter's graduation. Most women seem save them for weddings-and that's it.
Would you wear a hat to a wedding (and feel comfortable in it)?
If so, wear it to a graduation ceremony. If not, don't.
*splutter* ..!!
cocktail dress & suit for men
You turned down an offer from KCL Chris? That's funny, I turned down an offer from KFC ;)
Very silly, Karen!

These days, KFC probably offers better career prospects than any degree course can offer!
;-)

Think I'll go with pasta & woofgang, no hat.
Btw Chris, last time I went to the ballet I wore (smart) jeans and a nice top, as did a lot of other theatre goers.
And all the chicken you can eat......
