Does anyone have any tips on making butter (straight from the fridge) spreadable, in a relatively short time ?

Would a few seconds in a microwave do the trick ?

Cut off what you need and zap that for a very few seconds (5-10) to avoid the risk of melting an entire pack.

Yes, on defrost for about five minutes (depending on the power of your microwave).
As chaptazbru says but be careful you don't do it for too long as it will soon turn to liquid.
Just buy Clover.. spreadable from the fridge....
Or even Anchor spreadable
I hardly ever put butter in the fridge so it's always spreadable. Simple really!

As Diddlydo points out, it's not really necessary to keep butter in the fridge (especially at this time of year). Just keep it somewhere cool and always use a very sharp knife to cut thin slices from the block; they spread more easily.
I don't put butter in the fridge either. Clover, imo, is not spreadable from the fridge.
Nor is Lurpak spreadable ummmm
We get through so much butter (how naughty) I leave it out this time of year .
In the summer I put it in the pantry which is cool .
Be aware that butter heated in a microwave will melt on the inside before it becomes fully softened. My microwave is a 1kW model, and I can only heat butter straight from the fridge for around 35 seconds. Any more, and it becomes liquid internally. After microwaving, it's OK for spreading on toast, but needs around another half hour just sitting in a warm kitchen before it can be used on fresh bread.

I just don't keep it in the fridge - it's on the worktop, with its lid on.
Here's a video clip showing how the Warburton heated knife works but to be honest with you, I'm sure dipping a knife into a jug containing very hot water would do the same thing and cost a lot less.

Mine is just in the kitchen cupboard, never keep it in the fridge and I don't like the thought of defrosting it to use.

I always keep butter in the fridge-I love it ice cold,and I can cut slivers off...mmmm.
Ah this thread brings back happy memories. My mum had a market stall, and of course she used to work Saturdays, so dad was in charge of making gather tea before he picked her up. We had a coal fire, and he used to cut the rock hard butter into cubes and sit in front of the fire, warming it gently as he mashed it with a knife! And he never cut the bread before he buttered it - he would ut off the crust, then butter the loaf, then cut that slice off, then butter the next slice, and in he would go till the bread was all buttered. Happy memories indeed!
