Can't be arsed to read through the previous answers, but no, we keep them on the kitchen worktop - as they do in the supermarkets.

As long as they're fresh, i.e organic, free range (and you haven't bought them from Tesco), they'll be fine :-)
Baby Sham: egg boxes usually say "refrigerate after purchase to retain freshness".

If refridgeration is advised I don't understand why shops don't refridgerate them- they could have been on their shelves for weeks

What is actually advised is that eggs should be kept at a constant temperature of less than 20C. Most supermarket environments comply with that requirement. Many domestic kitchens don't.
I really don't understand why you would NOT refrigerate eggs...but leave them in a warm kitchen. Would you do this with any other perishable food?
bread, gingejbee?

Cheese, definitely! Decent cheese should never be stored in a fridge. (I've got some Stilton in my kitchen cupboard now that I bought about a week ago. In another couple of days it will start to go runny and be absolutely delicious!)
Thanks, Buenchico.
We don't have heating in the kitchen but I'll check the temp tomorrow and may try to persuade mrsff that we should keep them in the fridge. The fridge is only 2-3% though- is that not too cold?

2-3°C, I meant
Each to their own but I think most of you are wrong, in my opinion they should not be in the fridge and I have eaten eggs all my life with no problem. My family have had chicken farms so I do have some knowledge on the subject.
We never refrigerate eggs and they keep for weeks, the eggs we sell are sold with a couple days of laying so will have a long shelf life.

We also never wash the eggs, washed eggs will deteriorate much quicker, if they are really dirty we keep them ourselves and wash them immediately prior to use if required.
f-f: depending on how long you want to keep it, bread in the fridge - yes, keeps longer.
Cheese- well, depends and I don't class it as "perishable" anyway...because it continues to improve, not deteriorate ....up to a point.
Anyway, who cares? People do what they do...
Bread doesn't keep longer when stored in the fridge!
Bread is ruined by keeping it in the fridge, it makes it go all doughy and firm and it looses its freshness.
Bread will go mouldy in warm weather quicker at room temperature than when kept cool...I've found.
As I said, people will do what they do..
I just keep bread in a cooler area if I can, then just chuck it when it is no longer fresh or feed it to the animals, but I wouldn't put it in the fridge.
I bet some people keep tomatoes in the fridge too......
