Does anyone use one of these things and have success?

It does sound like you're over cooking it.
Try co-op's basmati rice. You don't need to rinse it. Just put it a saucepan and add enough boiling water to cover it, bring back to the boil, stir once, lid on and simmer. Keep an eye on it as sometimes it needs topping up.
Put it on the lowest heat you have.

You must rinse the rice many times until the water runs clear before you cook it, its the rice flour that causes the stickyness, then work out the water v rice, normally one cup of rice to two of water, enough for two people, microwave it covered for 10 mins, then stir, check how much water left, if none, add another cupful, micro for another 6 mins, check thats its not still wet, if it is wet, cook for further two mins uncovered, then let stand uncovered for a few minutes. give a stir around with a fork. works for me with any rice, asda or expensive.
Mine cooker sounds like it's the same as your's Eth, I followed the instructions in the box.
1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water (though the instructions said 5), put it in microwave for 10 mins and it was still watery, did another 2 minutes and it was glue.
This is one I bought. Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation

Yes, that's the one rocky.
In my instructions it says place one and a half/two cups of water to one cup of rice and micro on full power for 8/10 minutes. I always make double so use two cups of rice and four of water, bung it in for ten minutes, have a look and a stir the bung it in for another minute or two. I then leave it to stand while I faff around, probably for anything up to 15 minutes.
When I use brown rice I do it for 18 minutes for the same double quantity.
Five cups of water to one of rice is waaay too much, it doesn't say that in my instructions.
