Tolerance For Raw Chillies ?

Just supposing ...

You live in a town where there is a Chilli Festival in September.

You would like to demonstrate your chilli eating credentials, by picking up the odd chilli and chomping away on it, casually commenting on the flavour, and inviting those with you to try it and see what they think.

But you might (at the moment) be regarded as a bit of a light weight when it comes to eating raw chillies.

If, hypothetically ...

... one were to eat a raw chilli each day (and then stand on one's balcony, trying to suck in some cool air!) ...

Would one develop a tolerance for chillies?

Or would it just be a whole summer of pain, with no real benefit?

Do you build up a resistance???

Please note not all of us have a balcony to stand on.
Seems you need to do some research on 'chilis'. There are thousands of types ranging from ones that most people could eat raw right up to ones that can cause a heart attack. You would have to start with a jalapeno,one of the mildest and work your way up seems a bit radical just to show off for one day at a chili festival -or maybe this is a joke............:-)

You might build up a stomach disorder. Chilli is measured on a schofield scale as to it's heat.It is determined on how many million glasses of water you would have to drink to neutralise the heat or something similar to that
Chilli is supposed tombe a pain killer though as in Tiger Balm.
I think the Jalapa Nokia or something like that currently stands as the hottest but a Scotch Bonnet does it for me.

Sorry read Naga Jolokia chillis.
Many people who frequent curry houses gradually 'work their way up' through the strengths of curries until they can eventually consume a phaal dish without difficulty. So it seems obvious that a certain amount of 'acclimatisation' is possible.

However it might still be wisest to avoid really hot chillies!

I'm not thinking of any of the stupidly hot ones.

I wouldn't want to chow down on a scotch bonnet, or anything like that.

Just, you know ...

"Ooh, these look nice" ... (picks up) ... (crunch, crunch, crunch ...) ... "Oh yes, that has a really good flavour" ... (gal pals look on in amazement) ... "What? These are good, you should try one" ...

As opposed to ...

I think I am allergic to chillies,the littliest bit,or dried chillies,makes my eyes water,mouth goes really sore,eyes water,runny nose and in pure agony for about 10 minutes,is this an allergy ????
Homer also ended up tripping! (I know, jj, I know. I say that as though it's a bad thing)

No way is that an allergy. That is all part of the rich life pattern of the Chilli. I have to wear a surgical mask in my shed to grind down Naga Jalokia dried chilli to powder and even then it stings my eyes. :-)
retrochec,no matter how mild it still has the same effect
To pass yourself off as a seasoned chilli taster, start mild and build your way up through the heat levels. To actually taste just nibble off the tip and then wax lyrical about the chocolatey/sweet/fruity/tobacco tones.

By nibbling just the tip you'll avoid the seeds and ribs were the capsaicin (hot bit) is and you'll avoid the embarassing running nose, streaming eyes and coughing episode :-)
