Substitute For Bread
26 Answers
I adore bread....white, wholemeal, granary, you name it...i love it. A huge plate of toast would be my last meal on death row.
But it's making me feel sluggish and tired. I'm trying to lose weight by doing alternate fasting days. At the moment, it's going well.
But i need something on my "eat anything" days. I usually throw some toast in or have a sarnie or egg or beans on toast.
Is there anything out there, not loaded with bad carbs that i can have for lunch etc.

Hi, hammerman, my number 2 son is a Hammers fan, he even signed up my my grandson( now 2) to the club. That by the by, have you tried the wide range of crispbreads, ? As an insulin dependant diabetic i try to keep my carbs in check and find that you can still have your 'sandwiches' low carb if you have them within crispbreads instead of 'breads ,wraps or faheta' type wrappings. There are many on the market that have calories and carbs well below 'bread' and crunchier too. (sorry for the typos)P
Try making an open sandwich, using Ryvita. There are lots of different varieties available these days....my favourite is the Dark Rye.
I would put some pastrami on them, with some piccalilli or perhaps some mustard, with sliced tomatoes and cucumber. Or some smoked salmon, with Philadelphia cheese ! Yum Yum !
There are endless variations on the Ryvita open sandwich principle.
If you have an IKEA near you, try their huge round Knackebrot, with the whole in the middle...great fun to eat !
Actually, when in IKEA but some of their cod roe caviar, in the toothpaste-like tubes. Even more Yum Yum !

I've given up breafor the same reasons as you.
I eat rice cakes in place of sandwiches, or salads for lunch. I have even managed to eat soup with no bread now and have a few slices of cucmber and radish with it. Try having a few small new potatoes with your eggs, or beans on a small jacket potato.
Dare I mention ryvita?! I like it but it is a standing joke isn't it?! Have is with cottage cheese and onion, or marmite and cucumber. Or dip it in soup if you want a warm lunch.

Wow, thanks everyone. I love Ryvita especially with cottage cheese and pineapple.
I was just looking for some cereal....i do enjoy a bowl of cornflakes or branflakes with ice cold milk on and a sprinkling of canderel.
I couldn't believe how much sugar goes into that stuff....6, 7, 8 grams of sugar. Think i'll stick to bite size shredded wheat.

Hammerman...try this for breakfast. Ordinary porridge oats, with some canderel and maybe throw in a handful of raisins and/or dessicated coconut.
Starves off hunger pains for hours afterwards.....something to do with slow-release carbohydrates.
Or buy that Jordans Crunchy mix ( or similar ) and use some Greek Yoghurt instead of milk. I eat loads of Yoghurt every week, and even make my own, although those big tubs in Lidl are very delicious and extremely good value.
Or make a fresh fruit salad, with an orange juice base. Add my secret ingredient to this....sprinkle of coriander....nice orangey flavour. Keep it in a Tupperware container and add more fruit every day. This makes a good dessert as well, with Greek Yoghurt on it.
All this typing is making me hungry ! ! !
