on Wednesday I bought a boned leg of pork to cook tomorrow, just took it out of the fridge to check the weight and noticed the chap who served me has stuck a sticker on it with use by 20 dec on it, I got it from the fresh meat counter at Morrisons, surely it will still be ok? its been in the coldest part of the fridge, it was not wrapped when in the display counter.
When I worked for Waitrose they would have a delivery of 50 sides of pork on a Monday morning Until the cuts were displayed in the cabinet then they would have a 2 day code put on them so they could be a week old so I would not worry to much. Generally if it smells OK it will be alright. The dates are put on goods are for the benefit of the Supermarket and not Joe Public
Neither pigs nor their meat come labelled with a date....so it's Mr. Morrison who has come up with that info...
Seriously though..... you bought it on Wednesday, which was the 20th...are you sure that the date given on the sticker isn't a "purchased on" date? I can't speak for Morrisons, but I know that food bought at Waitrose's service counters has a label with weight, price per kilo etc. and the actual date of purchase.
,,,very strange... I was reading this post (from last night) and when I posted an answer, I find that gollob has replied to it just before me.
Just a coincidence?
Thanks for your replies, I cooked the pork today and it was lovely, I shall be more observant in future, I think that date was a mistake. Happy Christmas everyone.
