Store Cupboard Ideas
22 Answers
Boy #1 is currently eating me out of house and home. He has three meals a day and by this time of an evening he is ravenous again. I'm looking for substantial snack ideas that use store cupboard ingredients - things like flavoured noodles, etc.

with something to give it a bit of flavour stirred into it. (If you've got a drop of white wine left in a bottle it really helps it along but some cheese or a few mushrooms can work well too - or simply throw in whatever sauce you've got handy, such as Worcestershire). Pour over some 'value' pasta. Result: A tasty, filling and incredibly cheap meal (possibly costing less than 50p depending upon what you add to the pasta)
A can of Lidl's own brand baked beans and sausages (40p)

served over two slices of buttered toast. Under 50p for a meal.
Half a can of bacon grill (50p, based upon paying a quid for a can in B&M) and half a can of baked beans (12p if you buy supermarket 'own brands'), served on two slices of buttered toast. (Around 70p for a meal).
If you've got a Poundstretcher near to you, they sell Dewhurst ready meals (which keep in your cupboard, rather than in the fridge) for a quid each. They do Sweet & Sour Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala and Chilli con Carne. They also have a decent range of other quick snacks, starting at 29p for the 'Mug Shot Snack Stop' range:

That's the price you pay for living somewhere posh!
If I was looking for something quick and simple in Waitrose, I'd probably have half a can of haggis (£1.45 per can) with some instant mash (made with butter). Waitrose sell Smash at £1.25 for a 6-portion pouch. So, being generous with the butter, that's just a tadge over a quid for a decent meal.
. . . or perhaps I'd replace the bacon grill in my suggestion above with half a can of grilled Spam (£1.75 per can). The baked beans aren't much dearer, at 14p per portion (based upon half a can of their 'Essential' product, bought at £1.10 for 4 cans). So that's around a quid for a meal.
My canned sausages-&-beans on toast suggestion is more expensive when you have to pay 90p for the Branston product but still not massively expensive, at around a quid including the bread.
Sardines on toast would be cheap (with 'Essential' sardines in tomato sauce priced at just 49p in Waitrose).
If you've got time to cook something in the oven, my famous pilchard bake would be a possibility. Waitrose sell the pilchards in tomato sauce for 50p. The canned spuds are 47p for a 'normal' size can or 61p for a 'double' size one. You'd just need to add the cheese, mustard and black pepper (and possibly something to serve it with, such as sliced green beans or sweetcorn). Recipe here:
