Helen, I think it's the word 'stovies', as in the plural of 'stovy', made me think it was perhaps some sort of bread thing cooked on the stove top in a frying pan.

I love leftovers with potato, I think I maybe have some Irish in my heritage as I can eat potato any which way it comes πŸ₯”πŸŸπŸ˜‹

Just as well, Redhelen.  Surprising you wasn't my intention.

Vagus, I just don't understand the notion of comfort eating.  I think of the lovely Bridget Jones with her tub of ice cream or whatever it was she was tucking into when she was miserable.... but I don't understand it.

I used to eat Heinz sandwich spread and loved Liver sausage sandwiches. I think the only foods I could not stand as a child was porridge and pease pudding.

You got FOOD? You were LUCKY! Our mam... etc, etc.

Grilled cheese sandwiches: The combination of melted cheese between slices of crispy bread can evoke feelings of warmth and nostalgia for many people.

Macaroni and cheese: Creamy, cheesy pasta is a classic comfort food that often reminds people of childhood meals.

Chocolate chip cookies: Freshly baked chocolate chip cookies with a soft, chewy texture are a beloved treat for many and can bring feelings of comfort and happiness.

Chicken noodle soup: This warm and soothing soup is often associated with comfort and healing, especially during times of illness or cold weather.

Mashed potatoes: Creamy mashed potatoes, often topped with butter or gravy, are a comforting side dish that many people enjoy.

Andy, I used to enjoy Creamola, too.  There is a recipe on this thread, give it a go

Naomi, I think we're talking about comfort food here though, rather than comfort eating, two different things in my book.

I agree Vagus - perhaps its comfort aspect that Naomi does not understand.

Beans on toast, mashed potatoes, tomato soup with grated cheese, doughnuts πŸ˜„

Redhelen, you're right.  It is the comfort aspect don't understand.

I'll be honest I don't understand the question either. Comfort food from childhood to me is things I used to like that cheered or warmed me up but most of them are not available anymore - Vesta Beef Curry and Chow Mein (yes really), Duocan curries,  Birds Eye frozen chocolate cake with real cream, crispy cod fries, Mcvities (?) chocolate cup cakes - they were in a silver fluted cake case, choc sponge and then a totally flat but quite thick choc icing.

I remember those cupcakes Prudie, they really were a treat in my childhood. I have a large box of Maltesers sitting on the kitchen table waiting to be consumed, I always think of you Prudie, when I eat them😁

Definitely  Marmite on toast

Fried bacon with loads of  fried Tomatoes.

Cheese on toast

I loved rice creamola too, I seem to remember my Mum getting it out of the oven and it had quite a thick skin on it. Heinz Cream of Tomato soup was always my go to comfort food

That's nice Vagus, I've just finished the last 6 from a box. I hope my husband brings back replacements from the weekly shop later :-)

Comfort food for me was anything mom cooked...her pasta sauce, gingerbread cake, Apple pie, cookies. Also after school I'd make mayo sandwiches on soft squishy white bread. Retrocop reminded me of liver sausage...or liverwurst as it was. I'd eat it straight...slicing increasingly thicker slices off the roll. Very disappointed when I found it didn't exist here 😣

Naomi, if you are feeling down for whatever reason but there is someone there to comfort you, (lucky you) then that's fine.

If there is no one to comfort you, you may want to curl up on the sofa with comfort food. Mine is chocolate but now I've seen ice cream mentioned, if I had a tub in the freezer, it would be that.

Put a weepy film on and have a good cry while eating your comfort food.

Prudie are they the cup cakes that came with plain sponge and orange and lemon icing? Bits of the icing always stuck to the foil case

Pasta, can't you get it at Lidl, Aldi, or other supermarkets?

And prudies post reminded me of Twinkies cupcakes and Drakes ding dongs...cream filled chocolate cake covered in chocolate.
