Gherkins

can you settle an argument, I think gherkins are small pickled cucumbers, my friend thinks they are a species of their own but related to cucumbers. Any ideas?

I think they are part of the cucumber family (at least their seed packets are under the Cucumbers heading in the vegetable seed catalogues. I think the gerkins just are a small variety cucumber which are picked when they're about two inches long.
