Don't bother trying to cook it. Here's a quote from the chairman of the Angling Writers' Association, Keith Elliott:
"Shad have two special attributes. Though they look superficially like a giant herring, they are inedible, having about 10 times as many bones. I brought home the first one I caught and watched proudly as my parents tucked in. After several mouthfuls, they said: "Next time you catch a shad, Keith, put it back in the sea."

thankyou dave for your response, i have looked at your link, had we known that it is a protected fish we would have , for sure put it back, as we do with undersized fish etc. my husband and I have never seen this fish before after many years fishing in our local harbour, but we know now,, we were fishing for flatties at the time and it was foul hooked, and didnt look so good when it came to the surface, and only after looking thru our books at home ,we were able to identify it
