The first sprouts of the year are in the Coop, well, 24 less than this morning - love or hate? Boiled to a mush with chilli sauce and lashings of white pepper.

Awww Whiffey :-(....Yes stay here, it's safer, lol.

At the risk of sounding daft, what are sprout tops? Are they what I think they are? the bit of the sprout you chop off before cooking?

That's very kind of you.

I've just put my sprouts into the freezer for a few hours - what a good idea!
Oh, wasn't thinking really- was this name supposed to be a secret?

Dammit- sorry!
if you want your sprouts cooked to perfection for Christmas dinner, you should have lit the gas on or around April 25th.
lol sprouts grow on a thick stalk about 12inches out of the ground, the sprouts literally sprout out of the stalk at alternate points all the way up the stalk. they are a devil to pick lol
No Boo, Brussel tops are these

The sprouts at the top of the stalk. They used to be sold all the time in the 'greens' section. Delicious.
actually one pulls sprouts, not picks them sorry, forgetting my roots there lol
Keep away from CB Whiffey and brighten up the other sections!! This is a very jolly thread ;o)
Ahhhh righty!

You learn something new everyday dont you?

I've never seen sprout tops- do they taste like sprouts at all?
And I agree with Lottie, love nice jolly innoffensive threads like this one :-)
Yeah, the stalks are rather tall aren't they Dot!

People used to get a lot of extra nourishment from them in the 'old' days! Don't seem to see them in the veggie bit now though.
They taste like......................mmmmm....................mmmmmm..................... errrrr....................sprout tops!!!
they must taste real good to pigs, we used to feed them the stalks once the field was pulled.!!!!
rofl lottie- so let me get this straight....they taste just like sprout tops then?

;-)
We get our sprouts on stalks on the market all winter long - really difficult to carry home without losing the sprouts!

What, not even a little tiny fight?
Yep Boo ;o)
Well, having detested honey for years (and hence never tried sprouts in honey), I have just become addicted to the stuff (due to having a rotten cold and needing several large hot toddies..... which entailed buying a jar of blossom honey, a fresh lemon and a bottle of whisky).....lol... I have just read that back and realised I must still be suffering from the foggy brain syndrome after the cold.....

To start again..... I once saw a recipe for honeyed sprouts which sounded nice but since I didn't like the taste of honey, I never bothered to try it. I'm just getting over a rotten cold and treated myself to several large hot toddies, thus finding out that I actually did like honey now.... so all I need to do is dig out that recipe for honeyed sprouts, then go and hunt down some sprouts !

Yes - it's a very nice thread Whiffey! Sprouts & all.

I'm glad the Ed removed some of the 'oribble threads that appeared over the weekend. Makes for a nicer, friendlier site. ;o}
