aldi - how do they do it??

just come back from a trip to aldi. spent £20.83 and got a huge trolley load of fruit and veg. the only other things i bought were 2 large fresh milk, 28 items in all. i really don't know how they manage to sell such good quality fruit and veg at such cheap prices. i'm always amazed at how little the bill comes to when i go there but today i am exceptionally amazed!! and exceptionally pleased :)

Answerprancer, what particular goods are you talking about? I can't think of anything I have bought in Lidls that I have bought that was made in a third world country. Why do you associated Aldi or Lidls with 3rd world countries more than any other supermarket. Their costs are kept down by no frills shops with far less labour. No elaborate displays of goods, etc. Have you ever been in an Aldi or Lidls?

It was an assumption, many manufactured goods in our high st shops are cheap because they are brought in from 3rd world countries where exploitation is a well known practice.
Someone asked a question, I gave an answer - I may have got it wrong, big deal - it happens.

Wasn't criticising your answer answerprancer, just saying that it's not the case with Lidls or Aldi. More likely somewhere like Primark though I would think or the pound shops that are around. Cheaply produced clothes, toys, etc. etc.

No criticism taken LL, maybe so with Primark (etc) but I wonder whether ALDI's and LIDL's cheaper groceries are subsidised by the large amount of other manufactured products they sell.

I like Aldi but since they opened a new one near me, they seem to want to rush you through the checkout at record speed. It kinda puts me off a bit.

Answerprancer, supermarkets don't deal so much in manufactured goods from sweatshops - the usual accusation is that they exploit farmers by squeezing out other buyers, then reducing the prices they pay for food and forcing the suppiers to chuck away any apple not exactly 4cm across, and so on. (I have no idea whether this is true of anyone in general or Aldi in particular, but there aren't as many farmers around as there used to be.)

I've noticed that too mrs chappie, I got reprimanded once because my trolley was not in the correct position at the check out. But their stuff is amazing.
Face creams fantastic. fruit and veg value for money!
Frozen fish selection great.
And to top it all, this week I bought my fave limoncello!!!! Yum!

i very rarely buy fruit and veg from the big stores but get it from aldi, lidl and netto, its so much better and lasts longer than the the supermarkets

only just got back to this thread, computer playing up yesterday.
when we were in germany in may, it was quite spooky to go into an aldi there, exactly the same layout and almost the same goods as our local one, even down to the special offers.
we tend to go to aldi once a week, and our local big supermarket (which happens to be asda) maybe every 3 weeks. don't like aldi's bread much, not very fresh i find. and there are some branded goods (heinze sauces, etc) which they don't stock and which we like. we don't have a lidl near us or i'd give them a go too.

I can make a nice red thai curry. I'm good at timing so I find roasts easy to do.
