Each month it has a demo Blu Ray disk full of playable demos of PS3 games.
A recent one (December or January I think) had 25 playable PS3 demos.
That way they can try a game out first and see if they like it, or that it is suitable for their age.
It also has reviews of games so you can see if they are any good (they give them points out of 10)
Make sure you get the OFFICIAL Playstation magazine as that is the only one to have playable PS3 demos.
It is about 5.99 but when you think a single game can be 40 it can save you a lot of money.

My local Blockbuster store rents out computer games (and of course PS3 games)
Why not rent some from there and see if they like them before going out and buying one.
Did they get the 40Gb model or 60Gb model PS3?
If it was the 60Gb model it does play PS2 games. You can get a lot of second hand PS2 games from the Game computer shop.
At that age they probably wont notice the difference between a PS2 game and a PS3 game.
Note the 40Gb Playstation 3 does not play PS2 games.

First, the official playstation magazine does not tell whether games are good or not.
That kind of magazine (the ones that only talk about one brand) gives bad games good marks. They are corrupted to the bone.
If you read it, you won't be properly informed and you'll end up wasting your money on lots of mediocre games for just 1 console,
whereas it would be better spent on another console and just a few top games.
You'll just miss out on the top games and waste money.
Second,
you should find out what game to buy BEFORE buying a games console... because that's the whole point of a games console.
