More Proof That We're All Migrants Whether We Like It Or Not!
There's been lots of debate in 2015 about Europe being swamped by migrants. Evidence is now backing up hypotheses that mass migration has been a regular, formative event.

There are many sides to this subject when it comes to discussing the current crisis, the way it is focussed on western Europe and reaction to it in these countries. I am not convinced that land mass or population density has much to do with any nation's ability to accept rising numbers of migrants in serious need of somewhere to stay. What does matter an awful lot...

I have been away while contributors to this thread have been slinging a bit of mud - the following refers to something a couple of pages back.
Ellipsis, probably all of what you write is correct and the inherent point within it is that, while the UK is being "realistic", other countries, large and small, put the UK to shame. I don't think any country in Europe has stated they have a need for the numbers of people they have taken in, I think it has merely been a matter of conscience. So much for the result: The movement of people was brought about by instability from the eastern shores of the Mediterranean to the Himalayas.
By pouring people, materiel, plus lots and lots of money into the projects, the UK has shown its eagerness to "heroically" take part in causing the instability but afterwards wants as little a part as possible in cleaning up the resulting mess. The self congratulatory medals are pinned on the chest and paraded at the Cenotaph - if only we could re-experience full-blown imperial glory.
For my own reasons (different from those expressed by others on this site) I hope the UK leaves the EU, completely - it might lead to reality at last making an impact and achieving recognition.
Naomi, you are of course correct: When looking for somewhere to place a burden one should be careful not to overload inherent competence and general ability - an already ailing donkey might end up dead. Perhaps other countries are better than the UK at dealing with fear of "them".

* Historic migration as referenced in the OP, based on warfare and conquering, is no template for the kind of modern-day migration we're discussing; it's a non sequitur
* When this non sequitur was first pointed out, bizarrely Mosaic responded with "if the current wave of mass migration includes more people engaging in a different form of warfare.....isn't that technological change?" - as if this was a benefit to persuade we "host societies" to accept warring migrants (who might otherwise be called terrorists) into our midsts, in order to further our civilisation!
All that said, I don't see migration as necessarily a bad thing; it's just that it needs to be controlled and it needs to be on our own terms, not forced upon us by the EU whose other member countries' needs and situations are very different to our own.

We know historically that it was part of some.
And change is change - saying that terrorists use new technologies isn't urging this to be a good thing, but it is driving change in host societies in 2015.
