'Jesus' is a translation of an Aramaic name, roughly 'Joshua'. 'Christ' isn't a name at all, but a title or claim. So his parents weren't Mr and Mrs Christ. Surnames as such weren't used; rather pople were identified as 'A the son of B'.

Firstly, the name Jesus Christ is an English translation of a name (actually a title) that was originally understood in Aramaic, translated to Greek then Latin, and rendered in English. In the original Aramaic, a version of Hebrew, (simply put) the name is pronounced Eashoa Msheekhah, usually written as Yeshua ha'Masheia.  For English purposes, the name and title should more correctly appear as Jesus the Christ.  Christ, from the Greek Khristos, meaning oil, or anointed.  Properly, then it becomes in English, Jesus the Anointed One (Jesus from the Latin Iesus, from the Greek Iesous, from the Hebrew Yeshua means the LORD is salvation or Yahweh saves.  His earthly father was Joseph, or translated from Hebrew as Yoseph.  Someone inquiring for Jesus' father would have asked for Yeshua bar (or ben) Yospeh. Ben in Hebrew meaning son of... Joseph is identified as being the son of Jacob, the son of Matthan in the geneaolgy listed in Matthew 1:15 & 16...

The Bible is a little contradictory.  In the New Testament Joseph was his adopted father, in Matthew 1.18 it says  "When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost."  In the Old Testament he was prophesised as being born of the loins of the prophet David.  "Concerning his son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh."

Now the bit about Jesus Christ....

The Bible uses a convention unknown to modern people where the city of origin is used very much as a type of family, or last, name. In the case of Jesus he is addressed as "Jesus of Nazareth" which gramatically acts like a formal name for Jesus. 

Something like "Jesus Joseph's son" or "Jesus of Nazareth" or a combined form would have been entered into the census records at the time of his birth. Not "Jesus Christ."  The word, "Christ" popularly thought to be his last name has nothing whatsoever to do with his name.

 

Christ simply means 'The Anointed'.  This is the same as the Hebrew equivalent word "Messiah" which also means "the anointed."

If I might offer... David, God's chosen king of the Old Testament was not considered to be a prophet.  His office was that of king.  It was, however, clearly prophesied that Messiah would come through his lineage.  Therefore, the genealogies of both Joseph and Mary (Matthew for Joseph and Luke for Mary), father and mother of Yeshua, indicate their lineage to be of the House of David and, therefore royal and legally qualified to be King of Israel.  This fulfills the prophesy that Messiah would be of the House of David, yet would be conceived of a virgin, brought to fruition by the Holy Spirit, thereby rendering both statements (the Matthew 1:18 reference and Octavius' quote from Romans 1:3) equally true Not wishing to engage in unproductive debate, I, nevertheless, fail to see the contradiction... with all due respect...

The contradiction I refer to is one in which the OT ijn several places says he is the son of Joseph descended from the prophet David (see Acts 2 - yes yes I know he was a king blah blah) and the New Testament which has written that Jesus was the son of god/holy ghost etc.  The contradiction (okay lets call it confusion) is referring back to the original question.  I think the Child Support Agency should get involved really.

Jesus is Son of God concieved by the Holy Spirit by the power of God. That is the Trinity. They are one. Joseph is Jesus' Earthly father.

 jesus  never had a father  and that god had sent gabriele to  let virgin mary know that she was to recieve a child jesus  who will guide people on the truth  ( a miricle to show men  that god can create who he will  )
