My car passed it's MOT yet again!

I'm well chuffed cos it's a W reg red peugeot that I bought for £3000 one day in 2006 after my Dad's estate funds came through, I never want to part with it as it doesn't seem to want to give up on me either and my Dad always said I should get a peugeot and a chance trip to the vets that day in 2006 led me to this car, it was just in at the salesroom across from the vets that day and probably the only automatic in the town! My Dad's watching over me!.

All is great thanks helen, only 3 weeks to meeting new granddaughter and it's hectic having BF around all the time but I'm loving getting used to it!

Just keep her well serviced and do whatever repairs need doing as soon as they crop up Dotty.

My 1984 Golf has just passed it's umpteenth MoT without even any advisories and I bought that in 1987. I just change the oil and filter every 2000 miles and give it a full service every year/5000 miles. Most cars will last for years if they are looked after.

what oil andyvon, as changing that frequently sounds excessive......and which county do you live in as to your local topography?

It's 20/50 DT and it's still golden when it comes out. It's £6.99 for 5 litres and the filter is £3.50 so it doesn't cost much. However, the car's done over 250,000 miles on the original engine now and the emissions are still good so it does like it. I used to own a chauffeur company with 17 cars and I treated all my cars like that. I only ever had one breakdown in 12 years.

a normal 20-50 like a Castrol, Shell would easily go 8 to 10k miles, a semi-syn to 15k and all with plenty of life in them. anything as to a syn is a waste of money on an oldish vehicle.......if you lived in the Highlands, the Welsh Mts, the centre of the Pennines, or the Lakes, then this would shorten a bit with the ups and downs of the topography.

I'm in Buckinghamshire DT. The car never has to do too much and it's never been over 65mph in it's life.

I know there are oils you can leave in for thousands of miles - but I just like to spend time on my car. This year I stripped it to the shell, fitted all new panels, a whole new interior except the three pedals, a whole new brake system except the pedal, a respray, new alloys etc. I didn't have to do that. I just enjoy it. I don't have a mortgage or kids and money isn't a problem. I stopped smoking 80 a day ten years ago so I now spend my time and money on my car. When I had my business the costs were written off to tax and the time was my escape from the pressures. I know I don't have to spend so much on the car, but I just want to.

Now that is different, andyvon, - you would have been an ideal customer for me, a "car romantic" as a customer - and there are plenty like you. Enjoy it all - if you ever need to cut back a little, well there's an obvious one as to savings!

(and a 15W 40, or 20W 40 will work just as well in the UK). I am sure that you know the 40 covers up to 40C before the oil thins to the point of being unable to deliver the expected lubrication - and for those out there who do not know, that is coincidental that the 40 equals 40C.......

I might just use a 15W if I was in northern Scotland, say living in Altamara.....

Hiya Dotty, I am hoping the same thing will happen to me, my Dad always thought my car was a rusty old banger but was very proud that I could keep the thing going. When the Probate funds come through I think he will be watching over me buying a replacement as he always thought I deserved a better motor !

Lucky you, my Y Reg Pug which has 150,000 miles on the clock is in the garage and it is very poorly (I won't tell you the word the garage receptionist used, but it sums it up in one word). I've had that baby since new and I am a little peeved at having to potentially say goodbye at last.

Definitely DT. I have my latest copy of Practical Classics on the desk as I type! In fact, my Mk2 Golf is the latest car I've ever owned! My 30 cars have dated from 1958 (Princess) to 1984. All my chauffeur cars were old Jags, Daimlers, Princesses and Rollers. I used to buy oils in bulk when the business was in full flow. I still remember rolling the barrels off the truck and using my stirrup pump to pump the oil!
