I have a few bags full of either garden soil or manure. The ones with manure would have been closed for a year (as they were not well rotted when I got them). There is one large bag however that I can't remember whether it is full of surplus soil or manure. Is there any way of telling please.

Do you mean manure or compost? Manure, even rotted, looks and smells nothing like soil.

I am ignornant as to the difference. The bags that are clearly "manure or compost" were bought last year in plastic sacks and were pony nuts or pony droppings. Because it was so fresh I left the bags for a whole year and it now looks good to use. However the other bag I have was in a separate place in my garden and it is that which I amk wondering about.
Does it look and or smell like the contents of the pony nut bags?
