Are they better in sun or shade.(They are all in pots and are normally in an East facing location but I would like to move some to another place,still East facing but shadier.)Thanks for any advice.

Thank you. Off to do it now. They are very late this year.
I can't grow them. Its like opening a gastropod restaurant when I try.

I know what you mean,but I have gravel ,slug pellets and copper wire and just hope.
I only grow them in pots (big ones) and I find they do well in both sun & shade. Need a fair amount of watering in the sun.
Beer traps work for the slug problem. I know it's cruel, but I like to think that they die happy. Wear gloves when emptying the traps, as the smell is appalling and you don't want it on your skin.
I agree with Alice, they're shade tolerant plants but that doesn't mean they won't grow in some sun.
